The government said last night it was investigating an unconfirmed report that 64 Cambodian troops were killed in fighting at the border on Friday.
Government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said they had received an initial report that Cambodian troops had suffered heavy casualties. The claim by a Thai military source of the 64 dead is in sharp contrast to earlier government reports that only two people - one Thai villager and one Cambodian soldier - were killed.
The two-hour exchange of gunfire near Si Sa Ket's Phu Ma Khua area took a heavy toll on the Cambodian Army's 80th and 81st battalions, said the source. Twelve suspected snipers were among those killed, the source said.
Also damaged on the Cambodian side were six artillery guns, 16 armoured vehicles and four multiple launch rocket systems, said the source. The onslaught almost wiped out the two Cambodian battallions, according to the source.
The Thai army did not start its barrage until Cambodia fired at civilian targets, a violation of the rules of engagement. "We didn't employ artillery at first, but had no choice when they directed the shelling at civilians," said the source. According to the source, the Thai army fired several hundreds artillery rounds in response to the Cambodian side's aggression to protect Thai citizens.
The heavy toll is believed to have prompted Cambodia's military leaders to call for truce talks late on Friday. Cambodian military officers Lt Gen Srey Doek and Lt Gen Chea Mon led a delegation to negotiate with Second Army commander Thawatchai Samutsakhon and Suranari Task Force commander Chavalit Choonprasarn.
Army spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd neither confirmed nor denied the report, but said: "If it's true, I would like to pay my condolences to them."

Recently I have contacted with my cousin GENERAL SREY DOEK regarding the war or skirmish with Thailand. What I have found out from him is an amazingly news. He told me that his BATTALLION as well as Chea Mon and Yim Phim's battallions had fiercely quelled four THAI's citadels:1) at kanthalak,2)Phum Srol, 3)Phu Ma Khua, and 4) one of the biggest THAI'S fortress which located 20 Kilometers away inside THAILAND. These citadels were no longer existed as the CAMBODIAN TROOPS AND BM-21 ROCKET launchers have enormously destroyed. There are still nearly 10,000 THAI refugees without homes as their homes were destroy recently by the Cambodian BOMBSHELLS. It was sad to see THAI GENERAL-thawatchai Samutsakhon and Suranari Task Force commander CHAVLIT CHOONPRASARN with broken hearts when they both met with the Cambodia Generals at ANLONG VENG. Regarding the four-black clad THAI SOLDIERS who have captured during the clash have returned back to THAILAND. I was amazed to see the Thai's school and the Thai military base inside THAILAND were completely destroyed by the Cambodian BM-21. But I am willing to see more Thais die in the forthcoming future. I told my cousin, Srey Doek, yesterday that if his troop will capture BANGKOK in the near future, just save the THAI KING'S HEAD for me. The reason is I want to drink his blood with VODKA to help cure my manic depression. I don't believe that within two hours of fighting, Cambodian has the ability to destroy four(4) Thai military bases. This is amazing.

Just like I suspected that the Cambodian have no match for the Thai weaponry even though we have more experience in war fare but we can not cope with big artillery.
Your source is absolute wrong and manipulated for your arrogant, the two Cambodian battallions was not wiped out like your source, those are still on the spot and those units are the former KR and they know how to fight better than your.
Khmer general lack of negotiation skills and had no plan, rush to negotiat with the invaders. The negotiation that these general are so weak was:
1.Did not demand Thais troops withdraw from the area
2. Did not demand Thais troop not to build road into the territory.
3. Must not allowed P.O.W (prisoner of war)to go free without government make legal document or trail.
4. Any negotiation must be held by the government not the general.
5. Khmer general demand nothing from Thais except 5 non uniform soldier of Thais able to stay in Khmer territory at Som Bok Khmun and build house for those five in Cambodian territory (request by the prime minister..what the!)
There are reason for these points, if these point had not raised Thais troop still station there, they will build as usual, and confrontation are still stand and you name it.

64 Cambodian soldiers dead during the fight ? That's such a big liar . I am not pro Hun Sen but I smell something from that report when Thai said 64 Cambodian soldiers have been killed .
In this situation, both sides want to brag about their advantage and superiority. I hope that Hun Sen and the Khmer government respect and care for the families of those who were killed by the Thai troop.
Who killed what and how many doesn't matter now because a loss is a loss and who suffers the most are the Khmer people that were affected by the fight.

Let me ask those shit talkers, who called out the ceasefire, was it Cambodian military or Thai military? Who raised the white flag in surrender? This should reveal a lot about who is farting lies. I know in the past fighting, Thai military always down play their number of causuaties. Getting a good ass kicked by little Cambodia is not something Thailand likes to admitt. Thailand will lies to itself to death.

This news may be made-up just to calm some thais down so they dont want to take a revenge. If the real war happened Khmer would need lots more of body bags. No innocent people deserved to die for this.

i saw lots of siem soldiers dead at the battle fild.

If war between Thai and Khmer goes on for long, the big loser is Khmer, not Thai. Thai has more population and more resources. To save Khmer life and the temple from being lost, Khmer government must take Thai to International court. Khmer will never beat Thai. Khmer can only kill their own people because it is easier. We are all human, no one should die. Most Khmer soldiers are from the poor farmers, the group that are put down by the high class society in Cambodia....

I have no idea about this figure. But I think because during fighting, the soldiers confused the wounded with the dead soldiers of the other side. If the casualty is that high, I don't think Cambodian military can hide from public.
The Cambodian military also claims a heavy lost for the thai side too.
It can be a psychology war too.

You are wrong there , the Thai did not want to take over the Prea Vihear, that would see them totally on the wrong.
they just want to remove the flag over Keo Sikha Kiri Svara Pagoda where they say it is a disputed land and they succeeded it.
That is why they stopped, remember before the fighting start they tell us to remove the flag but we did not and that is why they attracted us.
