Snaeha (Bang Bang, by Sony Bono) - Pen Ran

Jasmine Girl - Pen Ran and Ros Sereisothea

Flowers in the Pond - Ros Sereisothea

Over a number of years, the Los Angeles-based Cambodian/American band Dengue Fever managed to lay hands on some awsome tapes. Here is a vital folk-based music tradition often in perfect balance with more modern western music. In a lot of songs it seems to me it's how they express their own music in the world they grew up in during the 1960s to early 1970s. The brutal Khmer Rouge took over in 1975. They killed ninety percent of Cambodia's performing artists. Many or Most of the people who made this compelling music were killed -- tragically.

Now, some of the cassettes survived. Some of them were given some overdubbed instrumentals and reissued. Others remain as they were. I hail Dengue Fever for bringing us these examples. You can't avoid a heavy heart, listening to these veritable martyrs; the singing is especially touching.

I suppose this collection is limited in scope, but these guys and girl are not John and Alan Lomax or anything. I understand that "Cambodia Rocks", on the Parallel View label, is a better overview. (Or "Cambodian Rocks", I think) (not to be confused with "Khmer Rocks") (also Sublime Frequencies label, Cambodian Cassette Archives Vol. 1 and Radio Phnom Penh).

this particular anthology is endorsed by Cambodian Living Arts, a fine organization that seeks to recover and preserve Khmer culture as well aiding the families of recording artists who perished under the Pol Pot regime. I understand that sales result in donations to this organization.

12.57 who are you and what are you...? Do you seriously think the Viets did not fight with Khmers...? think again my friend... As far as my theory goes that before the French had come rescue Cambodia from these crocodiles-Siams and Viets we were controlled by them for at least 200 years already. It was the Siam who took most Khmer people to modern's day Thailand and this is reason we had very little population when the French arrived. We couldn't defeat them because there were two of them against one....

Khmer Krom always felt as Khmer and did not lost connection with Cambodia. Khmer in Mekong Delta try to keep khmer language as their own, or most of them moved to Cambodia and went to school with us.
But Khmer in Thailand did not have much freedom lost connection to Cambodia. Therefore they don't want to be Khmer. Not just Thai, but some of Khmer in Thailand sound to me, they look down on us Khmer from Cambodia and from Mekong Delta.
We Khmer in Cambodia always trust the Khmer Krom, because all generation of Khmer Krom have had real good educational background and never give up the Khmer pride.
