Cambodia's Human Rights Party said it will boycott a National Assembly meeting today regarding a draft law on the demarcation of boundaries between Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. A Cambodian People’s Party lawmaker said yesterday they could face having their salaries docked for the boycott.
The HRP issued a statement on Tuesday which said the reason for the boycott was because they had received complaints from residents living along the border who said the revision of border demarcation posts would cause them to lose farmland to Vietnam and Laos. The Sam Rainsy Party said that it would attend the National Assembly meeting but emphasised that it will not vote to support the draft law because they have received similar complaints from residents.
“The participation in the meeting does not mean that [we] support the government,” SRP spokesman Yim Sovann said.
Cheam Yeap, senior lawmaker for the ruling CPP, said yesterday: “This is historic work and it is necessary that we must have boundary posts, to avoid accusing them of invading our land.”
Cheam Yeap also said that he would ask National Assembly President Heng Samrin to dock their salaries of HRP if they boycotted. He declined to say how much.

Is the purpose of the boundary marker to avoid us of "accusing them of invading us" or to prevent them from invading us? Mr. Cheam Yeap, there is a difference in these two statement, one will allow them to take more land and make it official those they have taken so we can no more "accuse them". Is this what CPP want!
i think when it comes to borders, it is a sensitive issue for khmer people from all walks of life, really! i mean, it is good that be demarcate our border in order to prevent any future encrouchment into khmer territories, lands, waters, islands, etc, etc; however, this so-called demarcation must be carefully scrutinized using international mechanism, etc, so cambodia is not to lose any more lands, territories, etc to these greedy, thug-like neighboring countries( yes, all three of cambodia's neighboring countries laos, vietnam and thailand are all greedy and steal from khmer people). demarcation is inevitable and necessary for cambodia, however, it shouldn't be done hastily without the international inspection, etc to make sure it is done lawfully without the framework of the international law, agreements, etc, etc. yes, believe it or not, when it comes to borders demarcation, it is important that cambodia must not lose any more lands, territories, etc, to these neighboring countries, whether siem, laos or viet/youn, you know! that's all! lands and territories, waters, islands, etc are precious resources for cambodia, you know! even a plot of land, rocky or desert or just water all precious for cambodia, we cannot keep losing more lands, territories, etc to these thugs, ok!
BANDIT CHEAM YEAB!!!
WAS IT ANOTHER ONE OF YOUR JOKES???
IT'S NOT FUNNY, TRY SOMETHING ELSE.
participation; not supporting, what crap a crap lie, as always
It is the time for any party to have their voice heard. If you boycott this process it meant that you have no case against the Government.
Please, joint the process and prove your case in front of the public. But, I also realize that if you are wrong you might lose in the election, on the other hand if you are right, then you might gain more vote.
If you want to help Cambodian, you need to joint the process.
Boycott is a great idea, joining it and not supporting it, that is nonsense.
This debate should be taking place in Hanoi. The ruling CPP isn't ruling in Cambodia's best interest. The demarcation process isn't transparent. Not as far as the eastern border boundary is concerned.
Said Cheam Yeap: “This is historic work and it is necessary that we must have boundary posts, to avoid accusing them of invading our land.”
One could detect something of a Freudian slip in this remark. Note also the almost apologetic tone in the second part of the quote.
Historic it is, as Vietnam has never been in a stronger position to advance the border markers west ward since the Geneva conference in 1954. After decades of wars and genocide brought about with the help of Hanoi's master plan to replace western powers as the new neo-colonial master in Indochina, finally Hanoi is reaping the fruit of its labour with Laos and Cambodia delivered to it on a platter. But more remarkable than that is the manner of this delivery: every thing is being handed over legally via a 'prostitute' rubber-stamp parliament.
Why did I mark the word prostitute with inverted commas? Because most prostitutes may have little choice in the manner they choose to make a living and sacrificing their personal lives for the sake of their beloved kin around them or those who depend on them for survival. Society may scorn them or frown on their profession, but their tears and sacrifice make them the unsung heroines of our world and time.
On the other hand, politicians who never have the courage to stand up to national territory being usurped for fear of losing their political power and wealth; who would instead silence the victims of encroachments by giving them hefty criminal conviction for daring to stand up, these are the most detestable, cowardly species of man who truly sell their souls for personal gains and ambitions.
The CPP used stupid laws to threaten any parties that they talk about
border markers in Lao and Vietnam.
Khmer abroad knew quite well that
Lao is no longer a state,but a
province of Vietnam.
No opposition parties can speak up
against CPP.If someone or some
parties speak up,s/he or they
will be out or cut salary,or get
killed.
BANDIT CHEAM YEAP, MORE EXCUSES TO GIVE MORE LAND TO VIET THIEVES.
BURN IN HELL AH CHEAM YEAP!
Well said 3.45AM. It seems that in Cambodia today, those who have no power, no soldiers, are the ones standing up for Cambodian territorial integrity, while thoise with all the wealth in the world are too scared to even whisper an objection. When will these idiots learn that if they keep thinking like they do, they too will be controlled by the Viets one day, and with the corruption they are involved in, the Viets will probably kill them off first!
