The word AH KAING not Bad,but I dont like it too.But this word:...from King Sihanouk since year 1963-64.
AH KAING not a Bad symbol like AH YOURN.
*AH KAING ...can use when you get Mad or upset, so you dont have time to Polite them.For my idea it is O.K for him[ Neak nee pournn].I guested his understand well about this word.But WHO CARE???

Heng Thal Savuth did an excellent job with this poem in term of the ability to write poems. His ability to provide rhyme with intended meaning is to be congratulated and praised.
The poem can be considered to be written for or from a perspective of a person who experienced such affair; however, keep in mind too that older individuals in America who go to Cambodia to marry much younger girls also have a motive which is not admirable to say the least and to put bluntly probably taking all the advantages since they have the dollars. Therefore, there is certainly no real love, but taking advantage of each other.
How can a girl of 20 years old or less or a little more fall in love with a middle-aged man of 40s-60s? It may happen, but quite rarely.
So when you marry a very young wife and bring her to America, you take a risk and, I guess, most people think the risk is worth taking!
The poet's use of the word "Akaing" for rhyme is brilliant, to say the least, and by no means indicates any derogatory meaning or intention at all.
Most Cambodians learned French in the 60s and the formal Khmer words for America (L'Amérique, les États-Unis d'Amérique)and Americans (Les américains, Les américaines)come from the french words and the words filtered down the pipe to the local people as "Akaing" and "Amric" and people used them daily without any derogatory connotation at all.
I still use them on a daily basis when referring to America and Americans and there is no hatred or anger in me about them when I use the words.
Let us not make something out of nothing!

yes because you so lazy not go to school ,when the poverty comes in at the door your love will go away through the windows ,most my Cambodian people like to waste their times drinking beers and alcohol careless about the school so at the end your girl will leave you with out a sympathy nor memories like your poem. Work hard for one of any accomplishment,degrees or good skills if she left you there more reserve in Cambodia.

I like your explaination very much. You have a great knowledge in both world - Khmer and English. You also have a knowledge of history as well. Most of the people here dont have a complete knowledge and their perspective are very limited. Therefore, their ability to decipher are also very limited according to their understanding. They tend to jump into the conclusion very quickly. Basically, they are very lack of the holistic view to have a good understanding of the poem. Thank you for your clear and precise input.

The marriage is for the convenience of both sides. The old man gets to have the young girl for a few years. That would be paradise to him. The girl gets to come to the states. I don't think any side should blame the other. Both get what they want.

If this poet did not call A-kaing which derived from A-me-rican, what do you want him to call?
Each nationality has its own tone or sound. For example Khmers called French or Francaise "Barang" and Siem called French "Farang".
I see nothing wrong for calling A-Kaing (A-merican).
You yourself are not educated either.

I think this poem is excellent poem. But I am not going to judge his ex-wife or him, because I did not know the real problems between the two.
If the photo of his ex wife in the car look like that I can only say "She is a slut, low class."

There is nothing to marry with other races as long as we can teach the spouses and kids to know the roots (Khmer). I married a white girl whom I met in school. She is my everything I can ask for, very pretty, very good heart and very smart.
