17 February 1979: The day China attacked Vietnam

Vietnamese veteran Nguyen Duy Vinh, 56, cleans the grave of a comrade at a military cemetery outside Hanoi February 17, 2012. China attacked Vietnam on February 17, 1979, starting a brief border war during which an estimated 20,000 Chinese soldiers and 10,000 Vietnamese soldiers died. In the ensuing years the Vietnamese and Chinese governments have tried to forget the conflict and improve relations. There are no ceremonies in either country to mark the anniversary of the start of the war but in Vietnam, where anti-China sentiment still runs deep, people visit cemeteries to remember the dead. Only china would dare to confront khmer historical enemy head on. Cambodia should continue to strengthen friendship with china to put pressure on viet and the US for getting involve with the south china sea particularly the spratly islands.

Currently the Chinese challenge the Viet for a rematch, but the Viet beg the West for help.

Yes, the viets always bragged they won the 1979 war and claimed they defeated Chinese in other wars in the past. If it was true, why did they not accept Chinese challenge for a rematch?

VN does not have any super power backing to help fullfill its territorial ambitions on south east asian countries, including Cambodia.
And before the US can provide VN any military and economic supports, the US will demand real political reform from Hanoi, and I don't think Hanoi will be interested in any real political reforms or democratize VN.

I hate the Vietnamese for many reasons, but I give one reason among many is that they will cry and hit themselves against the wall and rock when they get beaten up by others. BUT when they killed million innocence people like Cham, Montagnards, Khmers and Laotians, they are silent, sometime they accused their victims like Laotians and Khmers "racist".

You are right that the Vietnamese like to brag. But Vietnamese also like to hide many things happened to them, they have a way to keep their people stay silent and move on to the next step. About the Vietnamese defeated Chinese army was true. But the Vietnamese themselves sacrificed many lives of their own people too in order to defeat a giant Chinese army.

I didn't read the Viet history but I read it from the Chinese. The poor Vietnamese peasants were sent into a grand valley to lure the Chinese army in, and when the Chinese army in, the Vietnamese leaders ordered to open gate of the red river into that valley killed all the Chinese army along with many thousand Vietnamese families, that was why the Vietnamese claimed they won.
The Vietnamese did not tell the world the true how many millions they killed. In fact they killed about almost 8 million people including killing Khmers (KK and Khmer in Cambodia), Laotians, Montagnards and Hmongs.

According to Praachman on world Khmer radio recently predicting something is going to happen around Khmer new year 2012, hopefully it is not going to be another China VN war.
