SIHANOUKVILLE (Kyodo) -- Athletes from 22 countries joined the first Sihanoukville International Half Marathon on Sunday in Cambodia's southwest coastal city Sihanoukville.

Of the 1,150 athletes in the 21-kilometer race were 50 expatriates living in Cambodia and 103 overseas athletes.

Speaking of the race, Thong Khon, the tourism minister, said, "The creation of a sporting event is the creation of a tourism product that provides benefits to socioeconomic welfare of the people and direct benefits to businesses."

Cambodian athlete Ma Viro, 25, took the first place for men in 1 hour, 23.37 minutes, followed by other two Cambodians.

The women's race was won by Clementine Tanguide, 39, of France in 1:43.04, followed by an Australian Pip Miner and Briton Laura Watson.

Sihanoukville, 230 kilometers southwest of Phnom Penh, is the second largest tourism hub in Cambodia after Siem Reap Province, home to the Angkor Wat Temple complex.

The city has been recently selected as a member of The Most Beautiful Bay in the World Club.

Cambodia also holds an international half marathon in Siem Reap Province that last year attracted 5,230 runners from 58 countries.
