The Australian government has donated almost $1 million to help protect Cambodia's historic Angkor temple site.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr announced the donation during a trip to the South-East Asian nation on Monday.

"We are putting nearly $1 million into a heritage protection plan for the Angkor World Heritage area to stop it being trampled to death as visitor numbers rise to 20,000 per day," Senator Carr said.

"We are using the experience gained at Uluru in central Australia and other UNESCO world heritage sites."

The Angkor site, parts of which are about 700 years old, is made up of the Angkor Thom, Angkor Wat and Bayon temples.

Millions of tourists visit the site every year, raising concerns about parts of it crumbling.

Senator Carr visited a Fred Hollows Foundation centre at the Siem Reap Regional Eye Hospital, in northwest Cambodia, on Sunday.

Australia has donated $6 million to the facility, including money to train local doctors and nurses to remove cataracts.

Thanks to the Australian people for donated money to help restoring Angkor Wat. However, this money will not be benefit to directly Angkor restoring project. As you know that Angkor Wat belongs to Cambodian in the name only but Sok Kong is the realy owner. So any donation to Angkor project will go directly to Sok Kong coffin first then the rest will go to Apsara agency and Khmer people get nothing.

3:38 AM, I understand your concern and so am I. However, the Australian government are not stupid. They will not give free money to a bunch of leeches and criminal thugs. You can bet there will be transparency, believe me. After all, they are the one that exposed the criminal activities done by Hun Sen's nephew, Hun To.

8:55 AM.. err, Australian Government have been financially sending and supporting the Hun Sen regime more or less then the US government.

You need to use your critical thinking.

Australian government can touch Hun Sen's family?? Remember FBI teams investigated Hun Sen families during the grenade attack, but were told to leave the country as their lives were in danger.

Noone can touch Hun Sen.
