“They are credible.”
Prosecution at the Khmer Rouge tribunal requested the court summon more witnesses to testify on behalf of documents submitted this week in a trial of three former regime leaders, following objections from their defense attorneys.
Cambodian deputy prosecutor Chan Darareaksmey presented a list of experts to the Trial Chamber of the court who could affirm the authenticity of the documents, as the trial of Nuon Chea, Khieu Samphan and Ieng Sary continues.
The three men are on trial for atrocity crimes, including genocide, committed by the Khmer Rouge under their leadership. Their defense teams have sought to discredit documentation presented as the trial proceeds and prosecutor seek to link them in common criminal decisions.
“The chamber could summon some of these witnesses for the first phase of the trial to testify further on the credibility of documents,” Chan Darareaksmey told the court Wednesday. “They are credible,” he added.
American prosecutor Dale Lysak also presented evidence on the structure of the Khmer Rouge administration, saying confessions obtained at the Tuol Sleng torture center in Phnom Penh were delivered to Nuon Chea, the regime’s chief ideologue, and other Khmer Rouge superiors.
Kaing Kek Iev, the overseer of Tuol Sleng better known as Duch, is set to testify on the role of the three accused men on Monday.
