HCM CITY — Vietnamese tourists ranked top among foreign visitors to Cambodia in the first three months this year.
According to data released by the Cambodian Tourism Ministry, 179,000 Vietnamese tourists visited Cambodia from January to March, accounting for 18 per cent of total foreign arrivals.
South Korea was next with 151,000 or 15 per cent, followed by Chinese, Japanese, Russian and UK tourists.
In the first two days of this week, the country received more than 30,000 Vietnamese visitors, according Tith Chantha, general director of the tourism under the Cambodian Tourism Ministry.
He told the Phnom Penh Post that Viet Nam's proximity to Cambodia and ease of access (by road, boat or plane) were the main factors in Vietnamese tourists topping the foreign visitors' chart in recent years.
Cambodia attracted more than 995,000 foreign tourists in the first three months of the year, up from 778,467 a year earlier.
More than 600,000 Vietnamese tourists visited the neighboring country last year, accounting for over 25 per cent of the total number of foreign visitors. This compared to 330,000 Korean, 240,000 Chinese, 120,000 Japanese and 110,000 American.
However, the country expects China to top the list in the future, targeting a million Chinese tourists by 2020.

Are these Vietnamese really all tourists? Or maybe some of them make a field trip to study their future relocation plan? With so much relaxed immigration policy toward the Vietnamese from the current Government led the famous Decho Hun Sen nobody really knows the answer to my question, anybody?

I have been wondering about the Vn tourists too,whether it's one way trip for them. I doubt that's the case because as with any migration, you need a paying job to support yourself. How can Cambodia absorb hundreds of thousands of them each year, what jobs will they do? It's not like they're the first in Cambodia, they have to compete with all the Vn people in your country. They're really tourists. And being tourists mean they have monies to travel. If they have the monies, they have good jobs in Vn. Why would they want to start over in Cambodia? The Vnmese who are in Cambodia are dirty poor people who don't have any assets or opportunities in Vn.
according to what i read, it is due to their proximity or close to cambodia. anyway, like i said before, strengthen cambodia's immigration law and we don't have to worry about illegal viet/youn living illegally in cambodia because the law law will punish them if they are. so be smart and strengthen this law, ok!
and if they come as tourists, nobody really cares; tourists are good for cambodia, period. make sure they have proper document, etc if they are found to be living and working in cambodia, that's all!
