JAKARTA, June 28 (Bernama) -- Cambodia and Vietnam can now instantly conduct real time searches of Interpol's global database, thanks to the technical solutions developed by Interpol.
This database currently contains over 30 million entries from more than 150 countries, including information on stolen and lost travel documents.
After only a few months, the Interpol's IT-based information exchange system is proving results.
Some listed criminals had been detected in the border area between Cambodia and Vietnam and judicial procedures were now proceeding, the Asean Secretariat said in a statement Thursday.
The Interpol information exchange system is a joint project of European Union (EU) and Asean, funded by the EU and implemented by Interpol.
Through the project, 16 pilot remote sites in Cambodia and Vietnam are now connected to Interpol's secure global communication system, comprising 12 border control points and two regional police offices.
As pilot countries of this project, Cambodia and Vietnam had called for the expansion of Interpol's information exchange system to include other countries of Asean, the statement said.
The Cambodian Central Department of Security last week hosted a ceremony to mark the successful conclusion of the project.
The Interpol-developed IT system is one of three components under the EU-Asean Migration and Border Management Programme.
The four-year Programme aims to support the development of an Integrated Border Management System (IBMS) in order to facilitate the movements of people, better combat transnational crime, illegal migration and trafficking in human beings.
It is the flag-ship regional programme on border management in Asean, with funding support from the EU.

i give credit for the new era of khmer/viet era of friendship, etc because it shows the two people are striving to better their sour relationship, at least historical relationship. that is always a good thing when people try to work to get along and to live side by side. this is a new era of good relationship under the rule of law, really. that said, of course, you will see an expected small group of opposition people that do not see the same thing, instead, they have distrust and inconfidance that give them a narrow outlook in life about this relationship, etc. i say, as long as the two countries work it out and look for ways to get along, they the world will be a better place for all, really. so, hate the present leadership of cambodia all you want, but the end result or the long-term result will be positive for all, i believe. it is better to do something about the border issue like properly and lawfuly demarcating them than to leave them undemarcated and problem continue to exist forever into the future generation of people as time goes on and on and on, really. so, why not try to find solution to the issues, rather than do nothing about it now? i give more credit to cambodia for trying to find solution to this thorny issue that seemed to exist forever now. it's time we all do something about it instead of do nothing about it, really. like it or not, let's all do the right thing for the future generation will benefit for all of these doings, you know. god bless cambodia always.
