Last Saturday, between 60 to 70 elderly folks - some in their 80s - line up the 5 km dirt road leading to Phnom Ta Mao zoo in Takeo. Some time, these elderly beggars would block the road to annoy travelers. Most of these elderly folks have nobody they can depend on. Their children died during the war era, in particular under the KR regime. Does the government has any policy to assist these elderly beggars? (Photo: Kimlong, The Phnom Penh Post)

I know it is very sadden to see them begging for money. It always bothers me on the way there. We need to find a solution for them. It is very bad for Cambodia tourism. We don't want to see them lining up begging like that...

i don't really blame cambodia for this kind of sight because it's nothing new to be alarmed about, really. that said, of course, i think cambodia should reform our social services and human services agency to better serve our elderly and children population. and that's everyone's job to help make a real, lasting difference, really. what i see is the lack of these services that cause this kind of social problem of the elderly, children, the disabled, etc, etc... what cambodia need is reform to fix it and provide for the elderly, children, the disabled, etc, etc, adequate housing, nutrition, and services for them all. that's how you can help make a real, lasting difference, ok. whining and complaining about it won't do much. i think cambodia lacks many of the services for this sector of the population, and we should demand better service and reforms in this areas as well, you know. so far, we all ignore this sort of social problem; it is easier for us to blame the gov't etc, when we ourself did nothing to help make a real, difference at all. so, in actuality, we all are in this together. so blaming cambodia is like blaming yourself as well, really. think about it. how can we all help to make a real lasting difference; by reforms and demand it! violence, revolution, civil war, etc won't help this, it worsening it, really. so don't even go there, that's not smart and wise. demand social services reforms, ok! stop playing the waiting game and the selfish game, and the politics game, etc, ok. do it now! god bless cambodia.

i think these elderly, if they have a choice, they won't do this sort of begging, but again, i know cambodia still lack of social services, human services agencies to help with this sort of society problem, you know. and it's time for cambodia and khmer people to wake up and see the world and smell the coffee, etc, ok! think about it, ok! and you can give them the money, and it won't satisfied their needs, so having a service system at least they know where to go for help, for assistance, etc, etc, really!

Viet whore @ 11:29 PM,

Are you afraid of your boss Hun Sen is that why you keep ignoring the cause?
You praised to Hun Sen, why don't you ask him.

FYI, your boss can't even feed his soldiers much less create a program for the elderly. You are a laughing stock!!!!!

To 11:29 PM>
This is only in your dream! The reality is ah HUN SEN government is so corrupted, it's like flesh eating bacteria. It's never can help those helpless people. Infact, it's more annoying for ah HUN SEN families and all rich people in Cambodia re. these begger people. So the stories of hunger will goes on forever as for poor Camodian peoples.
