The Government of the Southeast Asian nation of Cambodia issued operating licenses to 51 new garment and footwear factories involving a total investment of US$ 327 million, during the first half of the current year, according to a report issued by the Council for the Development of Cambodia.
As per the report, the 51 factories include 40 garment factories, 2 sock producers, 8 shoe makers and 1 textile factory.
With 16 factories, China turned out to be the biggest investor in the Cambodian garment sector during the period, followed by South Korea and Taiwan with 12 and 11 projects, respectively.
Other investors in the sector were from India, UK, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Thailand.
According to the Cambodian Commerce Ministry, with over 300 factories, garment industry happens to be the Kingdom’s biggest income generating sector, engaging about 335,400 workers, 91 percent of whom are females.
During January-June 2012 period, Cambodia’s garment and textile shipments increased by nine percent year-on-year to US$ 2.1 billion, the Ministry stated.

@ 2:06 PM, more sweat shops in Cambodia doesn't mean there is not going to be enough for the millions of poor Khmers, and believe it or not, even with some abuses taking place in other countries, official labor laws & regulations there are still better than those in Cambodia, where the pays is among the lowest, otherwise companies would have gone to Cambodia and net bigger profit from dirt low pays.
