LONG BEACH — Residents interested in helping an American nonprofit that supports education and provides emergency aid in rural Cambodia are invited to a fundraising dinner for the Cambodian Educational Network at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Paradise Restaurant, 1350 E. Anaheim St.
Tickets are $35 and include a meal and entertainment. Among the performers will be Long Beach hip-hop artist PraCh Ly.
The grassroots group, based in the San Francisco East Bay, was founded in 2000. Among its many projects, the Cambodian Educational Nework builds, staffs and operates primary schools for the poor in Cambodia.
It also digs and helps maintain sustainable wells to ensure drinkable water, and provides aid to the homeless, orphaned, elderly and disabled.

You should be concerned because if I don't like the environment or setting of the event, don't expect me or my entourage to be there with my $35. Do you know how toxic is rap/hip hop music is to the cambodian community in America? Just look at the majority of Khmer teenagers in long beach. I don't like rap or tatoos, but I have no problem if these people who rap or have tatoos enjoy what they do and have. Generalization and intolerance are two reasons that usually get people into conflicts.
What is the problem if tatooed people and rap singers can do fund raising to help someone else?

I am a student from PP studying in the US. I have involved myself in the Khmer-Community quite a bit and I noticed the Khmer-American younger generation gravitated toward the black HIP HOP lop sided walking and Under-Wear showing mentality.

That is a great example of how in the US diverse cultures and lifestyles can exist together.
I think baggy pants and underwear exposing fashion are not in style any more here. These poor Cambodian kids you saw here would be in the same situation, regardless if rap or baggy clothing is the fashion of the day. They are susceptible and vulnerable because of their families poverty and of their socio-economic environment. They saw the easy ways to make money by being a rap star or a drug dealer, which does not require struggles or financial investment that their parents are lacking of.
Society has to both provide alternatives and means for them to get up and better, and to hold accountable those who create social problems by way of criminal activity and behaviors.
Unlike the Vietnamese they strive to become future doctor, engineer, scientist while the majority of Khmer-American kids strive to "make money by being a rap star or a drug dealer." Cambodian communities should show case future intellectual rather than a rapper whose vision can only go beyond the past of a KR regime.
The only "rap" music I like is when a woodpecker rap on dead wood in the forest. Sure sound more melodious then hip hop.

I used to live throught the Khmer Rough area. I was suffered and almost die. Instead of complaining and lazy, I put myself through school and got a good job. Now I own many houses.
However, these young children never live under the Khmer Rough. Most of them born in Thai Land and was provided with free food.
Now they complained of mental trama and want the small public assistance.
I believe you can make more money by working and you also get respect. Please winning.

But very sadly, the truth is that, nowadays too many Khmer kids sees it as a cool thing to live and look like a black rap/hip hop artist. I predicted that in 10 years, if the trend keeps on going like this, our Khmer people will be more poorer and more dependable on govt for assistance. I am so sorry to disgree with you. In American Cambodia Community in Long Beach, I have never seen any productive from these rap and half azz gangsters.

Prach Ly is not JUST a Rapper. He is a Human Right Activist, Producer, Writer, Lecturer, and Community Leader.
Prach has sold over three hundred thousand (300,000.) copy of his last CD independently. His music is used to teach in school. Harvard, Yale, UConn, UMass, Ohio and Brown University just to name a few have label him a scholar. He has produced and been involve with films that have won Emmy and Oscar. His schedule is booked at lease 2 year in advance, still he make time and volunteer to do charity work.

I just wish his style of music was not rap. The reason I am saying that, is because I saw young Cambodians (my people) with rap and exposed underware in Long Beach. They behaved badly. They wore earrings and used profanity without due regard some elderly nearby.
I do not produce music, however, I am contritubing much to Cambodian and American society because the type of "work" I do.
Not all rap music promote violent or use profanity. I think that most of these people who comment negatively about Prach have never heard of his music or been to his shows. We are all entitled to what we like, but we should be a little careful of what we like and the kind of music we listen to because we might take it the wrong way and create the wrong image and impression onesies elves and our community. Just like we all have difference taste in foods and everything else in life, we should also be careful again because we never know if there is any poison in those foods. So be careful of what you eat. A lot of words (nigger, gun, drugs, bitches, beating and killing, robbery, and other etc...) in rap music have a lot of meaning that Khmer people young and old shouldnt be imitated or walk around thinking like one.
I don't know much about mr prach ly or have ever listened to any of his rap song before so I don't know what his lyrics are about, but in general, we are all like to generalize. With music, that's all we can do is generalize because it is universal.

The Saturday event was okay, until prach Ly start rapping. I didn't know Prach Ly is going perform at the event. If I know about it, I weren't attend the event. I don't know about those people who like to hop on the bandwagon, but I always like to question things first before I make any final conclusion about anybody being a hero, a legend, or just truly doing it for attentions and some pocket change along the way.

Prach Ly has a lot of ego, courage, and talents to make an ass out of himself in front of people. He's really good at that.
One suggestion I want to give him is that he should take some time and learn how to read, write, and speak better English first before he decides to go on a stage and give lecture to an audience full of educated people regarding some topic he has very little understanding of. It's pretty embarrassing to have someone like him who can't even spell some English words correcting speak for Cambodian community. Crazily, I took some of my valuable time to listen to him talk or lectures, and he sounded very foolish and often very inarticulate about those subject matters.
Try to have somebody with some real knowledge look over some of your writing first or do some rehearsal with your speech before you decide to make an ass out of yourself.
If you don't learn from your mistake and try to make any correction from it, don't go around and give lecture about things.
