S.Korea Seeks to Win UN Security Council Seat

OCT 14, 2012
Arirang (South Korea)

Korea seems likely to win a re-election bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Officials said the country is doing its best to fend off the competition from Cambodia and Bhutan which are also competing for the single seat assigned to the Asian nation.

10 non-permanent members are elected every two years and in addition there are five permanent members that wield veto authority.

Korea had previously sat on the UN Security Council from 1996 to 97.

The government believes the seat would help it reduce tensions on the Korean peninsula.

Officials said they believe they have secured the required number of votes or two thirds of the UN's 193 member nations.

Voting is set for Thursday in New York local time.
