The ASEAN summit in Cambodia finished by promising much for the countries like New Zealand that are pursuing trade agreements and the economic wealth they bring.
But what of the other measures of nationhood?
If the world’s leaders had wanted to know more about the host nation’s record on human rights, they needn't have looked far.
Protestors weren’t hard to find, but they were only able to demonstrate for so long before being shut down.
One woman told 3 News she was one of a dozen residents near the airport arrested for painting a protest slogan on her roof. She'd done so in the hope that visiting dignitaries might notice, and that they might speak out about the human rights abuses here.

But only Barack Obama challenged Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on his human rights record, and that was in a private meeting. Others, like Prime Minister John Key, never got the opportunity.
“They have made progress but there is a lot more work to be done,” says Mr Key.
Among the human rights issues Cambodians say need addressing are free and fair elections, the release of political prisoners and forced evictions of the poor and vulnerable.
Directly opposite from where our Prime Minister and many of the world leaders have been meeting is a place called Boeng Kak. It used to be a lake and home to tens of thousands of people, but three years ago the government sold the prime real estate to a developer who filled in the lake with sand and relocated the families.
When you see where and what they were taken to, "relocated" seems too grand a word.
“Some of them have been scattered, literally dumped outside of the capital,” says Ms Seng, “30km away, an hour, two hours' drive away in no-man’s land, and a few courageous ones are here to protest”.
The ASEAN summit, they say, has been a double-edged sword: on one hand legitimising Mr Sen's government, on the other providing an opportunity to raise their plight.
If only the leaders were looking.

She was right I agree with her on almost all points, American should apology to Cambodian victim; American killed Cambodian more than 500, 000 and destroyed the whole infrastructure, property even though wildlife such as Kou Prey disappeared.
Before China step in, American totally ignore Cambodian, now Cambodian found oil then American step in to support dictatorship by providing the scholarship to his three sons and almost 20 years quiet with human abuse in Cambodia; American support Hun Sen corrupt crony by providing their companies access to American market cause land grab from poor in order to build their farms and factories. American sent military aid to corrupted Cambodian government in order to supress Cambodian who dare to voice against the regime like we see during ASEAN meeting.
Obama top security advisor said Obama talk “tense” to Hun Sen on human right but who know they might talk about oil instead because no journalist allowed inside the room. Obama should warn Hun Sen that if Hun Sen still abuse Cambodian American will ban on all export that have corrupted Hun Sen cronies involved.
American should pay $50, 000 x 7000, 000 Cambodian victims (1970-1975), China should pay $50, 000 x 1.7 million Cambodian dead (1975-1979) plus 5.3 million Cambodian victim, and Vietnamese should pay $50, 000 x 100, 000 Cambodian dead (1979-1985) and return property stolen from Cambodia plus Koh Tral and Koh Krachak Ses, and border encroachment must return to Cambodian and take illegal migrant home.

TO 7:09 PM,I agreed with you with most points in your comment stated but I really think that each Cambodian victim deserved much more than $50,000 and as the matter of fact all Cambodian citizens were the victim of those more powerful country involved in Cambodia back then.
These people are my real heroes;Mou Sochou,Theary Seng,Samoly Mom,Chea Mony,Sam Vichea,Chhut Vuthy,Sam Rainsy,Rong Chhun,and many other NGO & human right acivists.Everyone of these individual has the choice to live a happy life at another corner of the world but they chose not to,Instead they risk their lives in a troubled country to promote Human right,Democracy,liberty and Justice for their Khmer race who they left behind and is in the hand of the evil regime.Their determination,their courage and their will will sure help those helpless Cambodian and they will one day bring true democracy to Cambodia..Best wishes to all of my heroes.Your names will be remembered and we thank you for your choice for the sake of Cambodia and her people..
Here are the truths.
1. Hun Sen is a dictator no one dispute that, look at the definition of a dictator. The good news is even dictator has die sometime, even from old age.
Cambodia can survive that.
2. Cambodia Economic Land Concessions a policy of giving 2.2 millions hectares of Cambodia arable land, more half of Cambodia arable land to companies in China ,Vietnam and companies in Cambodia which are tie 200 of his friends, families, and CPP associates with 99 least similar to ownership for 99 years. This Cambodia can not survive because future generation will become landless poor laborers for the plantation. Give other nation potential claim to Cambodia land for 99 year, under international contract.
3. Sam Rainsy is not a good opposition leader. The opposition party has been declining since 1997 under his leadership. One can say it due to Hun Sen oppressive tactics, but good opposition leader and party growth in adversary. He can become a good leader if has courage and good management skills.
4. Mam Sonando is a true hero. He has courage to stand up to Hun Sen even mean his imprisonment. He is an example of an opposition leaders should be.
5. Irrelevance Note: Theary Seng is just one flies attract to shit. She is just a distraction. Miss Theary Seng, a Khmer opportunist does whatever she can to keep herself on the spotlight.

How about we ask the late king for compensation to all khmer victims instead since because of his naive policy of siding with the Vietcongs by providing sanctuaries, weapons, food so the later can wage war against the U.S. And without Sihanouk the Khmer Rouge had no chance of taking over Cambodia and, consiquently, the 1.7 Million innocent khmer people would not be perished. Who/what was Sihanouk?was he a nuclear weapon which had boosted the KR forces to win the war against Lon Nol?
Who/what was Lon Nol.??did Lon Nol regime had any support from the people? and did Lon Nol become president by forces,by popular vote,by people choices or by Coup?
It's obvious that KR would had won the war with or without Sihanouk involvement owe to the fact that Lon Nol's regime did not have any support from the people and the regime was so corrupted(100 times corrupted than today regime)Lon Nol forces committed many crime against civilian,I was one of the eye witnesses.The B52s bombing was also the caused that gave rise to the KR strength and numbers,every one int his world who are educated know this.Sihanouk let the NVA use Cambodian territories is still an allegation and was accused by the CIA,there has never had any trusted physical evidences to support the claims and/or the allegation.I am strongly believe that the Killing Field is brought by Lon Nol and the B52 bombing(America),not Sihanouk.Sihanouk had made one biggest mistake in his political career and that was he stuck his nose in to the KR and got all the blames he didn't do.Lon Nol washed his bloody hand and live happily til his death in the US and so did In Tam,America kept their mouth shut and pretended like nothing had happened ,Pol pot died silently in the jungle and the scapegoats are now in the KR court while Sihanouk might had became their only victim.Take a closer look my friends and see who was the real killer of the Khmer race????

From Hitler to Stalin, Mao to Ho Chi Minh, Fidel Castro to Tito, Sukano, Suharto to Ferdinand Marcos, Nixon to Kissinger and other leaders in that period they are all the same by killing people without second thought.
American support Saigon invaded Cambodia in the name of helping Cambodia to clear Viet Cong out but in fact allow Saigon to encroach on Cambodia, rape and committed atrocity in Cambodia. American support Cambodia very little compare to American support for Saigon.
Sihanouk regime did not has sufficient defence capability compare to both north and south Vietnam which the north got huge military supply from China and USSR and the south got weapon supply from USA therefore, Viet Cong use Cambodia for their war as they please or other word with or without Sihanouk approval both Vietnamese north and south use Cambodia as launch military attack each other any ways.
Some opinion gave too much credit to Sihanouk regarding the Khmer Rough “without Sihanouk Khmer Rough had no chance in power” in fact Sihanouk hate Khmer Rough very much he tried to eliminate Khmer Rough since 50 but with or without Sihanouk the Khmer Rough was grown big to biggest because North Vietnamese support and provide weapon and training, however, the Khmer Rough did not lose the border but Hun Sen did.
I was surprise that Lon Nol who did this coup d’état without foresees the consequences, he was so dump and damn. If he did not do coup d’état and work closer with the Prince to solve the problem and support the prince in that difficult circumstances then Cambodia had not lost 3 million of her citizen, infrastructure and national property and CPP Hun Sen has not been creating. Lon Nol was not high educated man, he was not politician and he was military man, old and bad health, he should not have done this if he can turn the clock. The crime that everybody said committed by the prince during his reign was very little compare to Lon Lol, Pol Pot, and Hun Sen, the Prince did not lose the border but Hun Sen did.
Khmer is/was always blaming the prey but not predator. All King in the world was/is always want to expand his empire not to shrink his territory
