GMAC ignores labor application

Dear Friends,

I have recently came across some interesting and shocking information. I feel that the information is necessary to share and will be a fascinating read for all of you. I received the information from an associate in the Cambodian government and believed it best to pass on to all of you.

I was told that the Better Factories Cambodia approached the Ministry of Commerce with this information. Primarily, the Ministry of Commerce agreed to proceed Transparency Plan of BFC which permit BFC to make factory report public access in any certain period if the factory is found no improvement after the recommendations were raised. They also agreed to organize tripartite consultation on the how to implement the transparency plan. Without any clear instruction, Ministry of Commerce approached GMAC and consulted about the plan. After consulting with GMAC, the Ministry of Commerce was convinced that they need to establish special team to solve the issues if the factory did make any improvement after BFC raised to them. Establishing special team was just only the excuse to implement BFC’s transparency plan. I am not sure if all the information is all accurate to what had been happening between BFC and Ministry of Commerce as it was confidential discussion. However, I am attaching the documents which BFC submitted to Ministry of Commerce in regarding their reasons and the plan to make BFC more transparent. What might make you so impressed is you can see how little the factory fixed the problems/violation in the workplace after receiving recommendations from BFC.

Please, read the documents carefully and hope you will see what you may be interested.

Thank you,

Bunthoeun
