Cambodian PM to file counter-suit against opposition youth leader over 2010 stampede allegation
PHNOM PENH, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said Sunday that he would file a counter-suit against Soung Sophoan, leader of the Sam Rainsy Party’s youth movement, if the court found that Hun Sen has no fault over the deaths of 353 people in a bridge stampede in Nov. 2010.
The premier’s remarks were made after Soung Sophoan lodged a complaint at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Friday against him, saying that the premier must be responsible for the deaths of 353 people in a bridge stampede in November 2010 during the Water Festival.
Soung Sophoan claimed that the government should be responsible for the deaths of those people because it was poor security and a lack of oversight that created the conditions on the crowded bridge that lead to a fatal panic.
“He said it was a premeditated murder. Let the court to proceed with the case, but I just confirm that as a citizen, if the court found that I have no mistake, I reserve my rights to file a counter-suit against him,” Hun Sen said Sunday during a land-titling ceremony in Preah Sihanouk province.
“This is a must in order to protect my reputation and dignity as well as the government’s reputation and dignity.”
The premier said that when he files the counter-suit, one should not accuse the government of political intimidation because the country is now full of freedom in politics.
“Now, it is clearly shown that politics in Cambodia is free from oppression because a party’s youth leader, whose age is just over 20, has sued the Prime Minister,” he said. “If (it’s) a dictatorship, not let you reach the court.”

Cambodia has such a weak judiciary system, any law of a country must be stronger than its leader. Just another rubber stamped case for HS.

It is certainly a short-sighted strategy on the part of the opposition to sue Hun Sen on any wrongdoing or even murders in the Cambodian court as it simply allows Hun Sen an opportunity to strike back using his government-controlled court.
There is no need to expose the non-independence and injustice of any court in Cambodia; it is simply a matter of fact that all courts in Cambodia receive orders from Hun Sen and the whole world knows about it, but International community has chosen not to take a strong stand in defense of the Cambodian people; it simply has decided to allow the status quo to continue.
Even a very clear-cut case of a grenade attack of 1997 against the opposition leader, Sam Rainsy and his supporters with the FBI investigation because an American citizen was injured does not go anywhere and gets buried with no powerful countries in the world giving a damn about it.
A not so clear-cut case of Koh Pich tragedy is going to give Hun Sen and excuse to put Soung Sophoan behind bar and won't raise any louder international outcry if real one has ever existed! It would be a waste of Soung Sophoan's courage and talent.
Soung Sophoan can stay out of jail and work to educate and empower young people of Cambodia to understand the real political and social situations of the country and it will them, the younger generation as a united and well-informed group who will challenge Hun Sen in the future.
Beside strategy and courage it requires patience and education of the public to bring down a dictator.
Without massive Cambodian public support and courage and their desire to make Hun Sen answer to his actions, Hun Sen shall rule Cambodia for a long time to come.

During Pol Pot regime this man killed all wounded Nol Nol soldiers in KG. Cham, between 1975-79 he killed Khmers like the others KR fast 2 millions....... and now he give Khmer land to foreigner. Why the world court is still blind, don't focus on this man. What is the justice for khmer people?
