Ministers from Mekong River countries meet

Environment and water ministers from Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam meet today in the Lao city of Luang Prabang to decide on mainstream dams on the lower Mekong River.

In November, despite a decision by the ministers to delay building the Xayaburi dam in Laos, pending further environmental impact studies, Vientiane forged ahead with the project.

The 3 point 5 billion dollar Xayaburi is the the first of 11 proposed dams in the Lower Mekong,

The World Wildlife Fund says the two day ministerial level meeting of the Mekong River Commission will put trans boundary cooperation to the test and determine the fate of some 60 million people who depend on the Mekong for their livelihood.
