SI SA KET : Members of a Preah Vihear citizens' group yesterday launched a campaign on the Thai-Cambodian border in Kantharalak district to pressure the government into refusing to acknowledge the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

About 50 members of Dhamma Yatra, a group formed in 2009 that campaigns for Thailand's ownership of the disputed Preah Vihear temple, turned up at the border to discuss their campaign with locals.

Saman Sringam, one of Dhamma Yatra's leaders, said other members of the group, which claims no political affiliation, would join the campaign soon.

Mr Saman said Dhamma Yatra had submitted a letter to Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra urging her not to accept the ICJ ruling on Preah Vihear, which is expected later this year after oral presentations by Thailand and Cambodia in April.

Mr Saman said the group would continue to camp at Ban Sok Kham Pom village in tambon Phuphamok while trying to get locals to throw their weight behind the fight for the centuries-old temple and surrounding areas.

He said a meeting of supporters yesterday resolved that the group would continue the campaign until the ICJ delivered its ruling. Members would travel to all border provinces to educate villagers on the situation, he said.

Mr Saman said the meeting urged the government not to accept the ICJ's 1962 verdict awarding sovereignty over Preah Vihear temple to Cambodia as its ruling was based on a convention between France and Siam in 1904 and a treaty with a protocol concerning the delineation of frontiers in 1907.

Mr Saman said the two regulations were invalid because they related to territories lost to the French.
