We ask the press to investigate the claims of the US medical team in Takeo that they are providing FREE medical services. It came to our attention that some poor people who have relied on the information of free medical services of eye surgery, dental and eye check ups have been asked to pay for the surgery, for the glasses to be cut, for registration, for the paperwork.
Case of 18-year old Ratana who waited in line for eye surgery at Takeo Hospital on Monday, Feb. 25, transported at early afternoon with the group in need of eye surgery to another location. Was asked to stay overnight for surgery to be performed this morning (Feb. 26) on the condition that his relative pay for $40 for registration, another $100 for the surgery) - request of money through an intermediary. Refusal to pay as it was understood that the surgery is free. Now he is told that he has to wait indefinitely, maybe tomorrow for the surgery, or later, as now there are too many patients. Ratana, originally from Svay Rieng, took time off on Monday from work in Phnom Penh to go for the free eye surgery. Ratana: 010.333.150. His sister Socheata: 010.906.991.

No money mean no medical care! This is the practice of Dr. Death!
Time and money free service never last. Similar story found at http://www.blogger.com/profile/00600948119989888703 can tell what wrong with money.
Maybe this free medical services only for the poor people from Takeo province.
NO free lunch in this world. Your free services are in debt for someone else/somebody out there has to pay for the free services. Period!!!
Free when things still last. Buddha also taught us "things never lasting permanently"
THE QUESTION IS WHO ASK FOR THE MONEY.IS THE DOCTOR ASK OR KHMER INTERPRETOR ASK? THIS IS KIND QUETION YOU NEED TO KNOW.
What a f..ck do the HMC want to do now?
Is it the word "Free Care" translate into Khmer in Cambodia "Must Pay"?
If it is true and if it the idea of" US HMC", I order that they should go home within 24hrs!
10:43pm,
Free means free! I don't think it's the US HMC, but people who worked there took this opportunity to get rich or at least that's what they thought.
Just look at all govt hospitals in Cambodia - no money no services. That is how CPP govt runs the country in the name of development and reducing poverty.
"What a SHAME for CPPs & its evil gold diggers.."
Don't just complain, and don't just accept this as something that will always happen. This is the page for the group sponsoring the trip. Write to them and let them know this is wrong and they need to investigate these criminals.

Seeing things like this nearly got us killed, but we will not roll over for this continued abuse and corruption, but just complaining will not solve anything.

We received this reply about the corruption during a recent medical mission at the Takeo Eye Hospital, where the staff were accused of demanding payments to set up appointments for the upcoming free clinics. The people that supplied this info have always been truthful and reliable, but this staff member disagrees.
Is there any organization that can look into this situation to determine the truth? If they are corrupt, they need exposed. If not, they need vindicated. I would like for Ratana to give the name of the person who requested money to help this investigation.
Myrna Porto: I work in Takeo Eye Hospital for the last 12 years. All information stated in Khmer Suvannaphum news is wrong. I invite you to visit the TEH website, www.teh.caritascambodia.org . I will be happy to see you at Takeo Eye Hospital.
