Dear all,
Teacher Phel Phearun will attend the Chamkamorn police station in Phnom Penh for questioning tomorrow in relation to a potential defamation case, resulting from comments that he posted on Facebook. Phel Pherun was stopped by police and had his new motorbike impounded on 24 January, despite producing the correct documents. He then posted an account of his experience on Facebook and asked readers whether they thought that police procedures could be improved in such cases. Phel Phearun's posts received significant attention on Facebook and were widely shared.
The case of Phel Phearun is the first in which a Cambodian citizen could face defamation charges as a result of exercising his free expression via Facebook posts referring to the authorities.
CCHR staff will go to monitor this case tomorrow morning as well.
