Cambodia´s Poverty

The map Poverty Rates in Cambodia - a compendium shows the Poverty situation in Cambodia. According to the latest estimations the poverty rate in Cambodia is 36,1%

The map Poverty Rates in Cambodia - a compendium shows the Poverty situation in Cambodia. According to the latest estimations the poverty rate in Cambodia is 36,1%

But what poverty rate (or poverty line) are we talking about. Almost everyone knows the "dollar a day" poverty line and if we apply it to Cambodia the percentage of Cambodians below this line would be much higher. If you apply a Euro a day the percentage would be over 50%!

The poverty rate this map uses per person is:

* 1,629 Riel for Phnom Penh
* 1,214 Riel for other urban regions
* 1,036 Riel for rural regions

Ca. 4000 Riel is worth a dollar. So the poverty line for Cambodians in rural areas for example lies at $ 0.26 (Dollar Cent) a day, that is approximately 0.20 Euro Cent!

Of course one could say this map is from 2006 and applies even older surveys and does therefore not show the current situation. But the present day situation shows that wealth has indeed increased in Cambodia, while the situation of the poor has roughly stayed the same. If one puts inflation and higher food prices into the equation it becomes clear that poverty is still a reality for a high percentage of the population. The poor can not afford education needed to participate in economic growth.

So you see it depends on how one defines poverty. Poverty maps never show the degree of poverty. If one lives below the poverty line, it is a big difference if one lives just under the line or far below. The ramifications this implies is being able to eat two meals of day often consisting of mere plain rice or only being able to eat every other day. A life and death situation depending where one is positioned under the poverty line!

If you think about these percentages and numbers, you will come to the conclusion that a contribution of an insignificant amount of our personal wealth can make a drastic difference in the life of a impoverished Cambodian.

Chibodia strives to bring about a brighter future for children from poor backgrounds through education. We do this in a transparent way with a hightened sense of financial responsibility.

Help us provide education to the impoverished children of Cambodia. Please contribute a small part of your income, a part you do not miss having, but that will fundamentally change the future of Cambodian children!

After 28 years in power Dictator Hun Sen helping his families turned to the welters millionaire, rubbery money from international donations to Cambodia, Sucking all country resources live nothing for Cambodian people.

Today majority of Cambodian people are living under the poverty line.

All Cambodian people should joint together to remove dictator Hun Sen out from power, this person is the most danger to our community and our country.
