Vietnam on Saturday announced plans to hold a national funeral for independence hero Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap in the first official statement on the death of the ruthless but brilliant military strategist.

Giap, who died Friday aged 102 and who was lauded as a genius for guerrilla tactics that defeated both the French and American armies, will be honored with two days of national mourning, the Central Committee of the Vietnamese Communist Party said in a statement.

"A national funeral has been decided for General Giap," the statement, released some 24 hours after the self-taught soldier died, said. A national funeral is the country's highest honour — above a state ceremony.

His body will lie in state at the national funeral house in Hanoi on Oct. 12, the Central Committee statement said, before being buried the following day.

Giap, second only to late revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh as modern Vietnam's most revered figure, was the founding father of the Vietnam People's Army, whose guerrilla tactics inspired anti-colonial fighters worldwide.
The self-taught soldier attained almost mythical status, securing victory over the French in 1954 at Dien Bien Phu, the battle that ended Paris' rule in Indochina, and then masterminding the fight against the United States until the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975.

His success also earned him some powerful enemies — he left politics officially in 1991 after being eased out of the Politburo almost a decade before — but he continued to speak out until well into his 90s about sensitive issues such as corruption.

After news of Giap's death broke late Friday, there was an outpouring of grief and tributes for the beloved general online — although state television and radio remained silent until Saturday.

In Hanoi Saturday, there was little public display of mourning, with police stationed outside Giap's home waving away curious onlookers.

The former history teacher will be interred in his native Quang Binh province at the request of his family. He is survived by Dang Bich Ha, his wife since 1949, and four children.

"(State broadcaster) VTV will broadcast live images of his funeral in Quang Binh and other activities in Hanoi and at Reunification Palace (Thong Nhat) in HCM-City (Ho Chi Minh)," the statement said.

It added that the nation's flags will fly at half-mast from Oct. 11 to 13, to mark the official period of mourning.

A funeral committee to organise the event has been established, with all of Vietnam's top leaders, including Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and President Truong Tan Sang, involved, the statement said.

The committee will be led by Party Secretary General Nguyen Phu Trong.

...the only good Vietcong is a dead Vietcong! What this Vietcong leader had done in the past is the build up to the present and open the door to more Vietcong naked aggression on Cambodia! Otherwise this Vietcong leader would not kick the French out knowing fully well that Cambodian need the French as the protectorate to keep Vietnam and Thailand from tearing Cambodia apart!

This Vietcong leader can kiss my ass and go to hell!

Cambodia needs a clever, patriotic military tactician and a clever, patriotic political tactician.

Giap is a military genius who defeated the French in Dien Bien Phu in 1954 and kicked out the American imperialist from Saigon in 1975.

The Vietnamese expansion into Cambodia is another form of imperialism. Giap a real communist is against all forms of imperialism.

Jendhamuni do you know what your Uncle Giap do to the people of former
Kingdom of Champa in the push of the northvietnamese army to the south ?

Some of them are not as luckier as your ancestor in finding refuse in Cambodia.

They are still living a miserable life there, I wish you could find out the truth.
