KI Media: Reading MATTHEW chapter 11

Recently, I discovered the sermons of my college pastor online. While at Georgetown University (1991-95), I, along with 10-20 other Georgetown friends, attended Fourth Presbyterian Church, a 10-15 minute drive from campus through the manicured estates of Northwest Washington, DC to the leafy suburban neighborhood of Bethesda in Maryland.

We drank in the deep wisdom of our college director, Chuck Jacob (now a senior pastor at Knox Presbyterian in Ann Arbor, MI) and of Dr. Rob Norris on Sunday mornings (and at times, classes he taught during the week days).

When I attended, the US Vice-President Dan Quayle and his family (and security detail), my Georgetown professor former UN Ambassador Jeanne Kirkpatrick, and many other well-known names from politics, academia and media, also attended. Dr. Norris' predecessor was then-chaplain of the US Senate, Dr. Richard Halverson.

All to say, if all of these accomplished people came Sunday after Sunday and benefited from Dr. Norris' sermons, maybe we too can find intellectual as well as spiritual nourishment from these talks?

It does not take long before one is taken in by the profundity and the humor -- not to mention, the accent! -- of Dr. Norris's exposition.

លោកយ៉ូហាន-បាទីស្ដ ចាត់សិស្ស ទៅជួបព្រះយេស៊ូ

កាលព្រះយេស៊ូ មានព្រះបន្ទូល ផ្ដែផ្ដាំសិស្ស ទាំងដប់ពីរ រូប ចប់សព្វគ្រប់ ហើយ, ព្រះអង្គ យាងចាកចេញ ពីទីនោះ ទៅបង្រៀន និងប្រកាស ដំណឹងល្អ ដល់ប្រជាជន នៅតាមភូមិនានា។

ពេលនោះ លោកយ៉ូហាន ជាប់ក្នុងមន្ទីរ ឃុំឃាំង, ហើយ ឮគេ និយាយ អំពីកិច្ចការ ទាំងប៉ុន្មាន ដែលព្រះគ្រិស្ដ បានធ្វើ។ លោក ក៏ចាត់សិស្ស ឲ្យទៅទូលសួរ ព្រះយេស៊ូ ថា៖ «តើ លោក ជាព្រះគ្រិស្ដ ដែលត្រូវ យាងមក, ឬមួយ យើងខ្ញុំ ត្រូវ រង់ចាំ ម្នាក់ផ្សេងទៀត?»

ព្រះយេស៊ូ មានព្រះបន្ទូល ទៅសិស្ស ទាំងនោះ ថា៖ «ចូរ អ្នករាល់គ្នា ទៅជំរាប លោកយ៉ូហាន នូវហេតុការណ៍ ដែលអ្នករាល់គ្នា បានឮ និងបានឃើញ នេះទៅ, គឺ៖ មនុស្សខ្វាក់ មើលឃើញ, មនុស្សខ្វិន ដើរបាន, មនុស្សឃ្លង់ ជាស្អាតបរិសុទ្ធ, មនុស្សថ្លង់ ស្ដាប់ឮ, មនុស្សស្លាប់ បានរស់ឡើងវិញ, ហើយ មានគេ នាំដំណឹងល្អ ទៅប្រាប់ ជនក្រីក្រ។ អ្នកណា មិនរវាតចិត្ត ចេញពីជំនឿ ដោយសារខ្ញុំ, អ្នកនោះ ពិតជាមាន សុភមង្គល ហើយ។»

ពេលពួកសិស្ស របស់ លោកយ៉ូហាន ចេញផុតទៅ, ព្រះយេស៊ូ មានព្រះបន្ទូល ទៅមហាជន អំពី លោកយ៉ូហាន ថា៖ «តើ អ្នករាល់គ្នា ទៅវាល រហោស្ថាន រកមើល អ្វី? រកមើល ដើមត្រែង ដែលត្រូវ ខ្យល់បក់នោះ ឬ? តើ អ្នករាល់គ្នា ទៅរកមើលអ្វី? រកមើលមនុស្ស ស្លៀកពាក់ល្អ រុងរឿង ឬ? តាមធម្មតា អស់អ្នក ដែលស្លៀកពាក់ ល្អរុងរឿង, គេ រស់នៅ ក្នុងដំណាក់ស្ដេច ឯណោះ។ បើ ដូច្នេះ តើ អ្នករាល់គ្នា ទៅរកមើលអ្វី? រកមើល ព្យាការីម្នាក់ ឬ? ត្រូវ ហើយ! ខ្ញុំ សូមប្រាប់ ឲ្យអ្នករាល់គ្នា ដឹងថា, លោកនោះ ប្រសើរ ជាងព្យាការី ទៅទៀត។ ដ្បិត ក្នុងគម្ពីរ មានចែង អំពី លោកយ៉ូហាន ថា៖

«“យើង ចាត់ទូតយើង ឲ្យទៅមុន ព្រះអង្គ ដើម្បី រៀបចំផ្លូវ របស់ ព្រះអង្គ។”

«ខ្ញុំ សូមប្រាប់ ឲ្យអ្នករាល់គ្នា ដឹងច្បាស់ ថា, បណ្ដាមនុស្ស ដែលកើតមក ក្នុងលោកនេះ គ្មាននរណា មានឋានៈធំជាង លោកយ៉ូហាន-បាទីស្ដឡើយ។ ប៉ុន្តែ អ្នកណា តូចជាងគេ នៅក្នុងព្រះរាជ្យ នៃស្ថាន បរមសុខ, អ្នកនោះ ប្រសើរ លើស លោកយ៉ូហាន ទៅទៀត។ តាំងពីជំនាន់ លោកយ៉ូហាន-បាទីស្ដ មកទល់សព្វថ្ងៃ, ព្រះរាជ្យ នៃស្ថានបរមសុខ បានរងនូវ អំពើ ឃោរឃៅ, ហើយ មនុស្សឃោរឃៅ បាននាំគ្នា ប្រើកម្លាំង ដណ្ដើមយក ព្រះរាជ្យនេះផង។ តាំងពីដើម រហូត មកដល់ជំនាន់ លោកយ៉ូហាន, ព្យាការីទាំងអស់ បានថ្លែងទុក អំពី ព្រះរាជ្យនេះ, ហើយ ក្នុងក្រឹត្យវិន័យ ក៏មាន ចែងទុកដែរ។ ជឿខ្ញុំចុះ, លោកយ៉ូហាន ហ្នឹងហើយ ជាព្យាការី អេលីយ៉ា ដែលត្រូវមក។ អ្នកណា ឮពាក្យនេះ, សូម យកទៅ ពិចារណាទៅ។

«តើ ខ្ញុំ អាចប្រដូចម នុស្សជំនាន់នេះ ទៅនឹងជន ប្រភេទណា? អ្នកទាំងនោះ ប្រៀបបានទៅ នឹងកូនក្មេង ដែលអង្គុយលេង នៅតាមផ្សារ, ហើយ ស្ដីបន្ទោសគ្នា ទៅវិញ ទៅមក ថា៖

«“យើង បានផ្លុំខ្លុយ, តែ ពួកឯង ពុំ ព្រមរាំទេ; យើង បានស្មូត្រ បទទំនួញ ក៏ពួកឯង ពុំ ព្រមគក់ទ្រូង យំដែរ។”

«យ៉ាងណាមិញ, លោកយ៉ូហាន បានមកលោក តមអាហារ, តមសុរា, តែគេ ថា, “លោក មានអារក្សចូល។” រីឯ បុត្រមនុស្ស ក៏បានមកដែរ, លោក បរិភោគ អាហារ និងពិសាសុរា, តែ គេ ថា, “មើលចុះ! អ្នកនេះ គិតតែ ពីស៊ីផឹក, ហើយ សេពគប់ ជាមួយ ពួកទារពន្ធ និងមនុស្សបាប។” ប៉ុន្តែ មនុស្សលោក ទទួលស្គាល់ ថា, ព្រះប្រាជ្ញាញាណ របស់ ព្រះជាម្ចាស់ ពិតជាល្អ ត្រឹមត្រូវមែន ដោយគេ បានឃើញកិច្ចការ ដែលព្រះអង្គ ធ្វើ។»

ព្រះយេស៊ូ បន្ទោសអ្នកក្រុង នានា ដែលពុំព្រមជឿ

ពេលនោះ ព្រះអង្គ ចាប់ផ្ដើម ស្ដីបន្ទោស អ្នកក្រុងនានា យ៉ាងខ្លាំង, ព្រោះ គេ បានឃើញព្រះអង្គ សំដែង ការអស្ចារ្យ ផ្សេងៗ ក្នុងក្រុង របស់គេ តែ គេ ពុំ ព្រមកែប្រែ ចិត្តគំនិតសោះ៖ «អ្នកក្រុង ខូរ៉ាស៊ីន អើយ! អ្នក ត្រូវវេទនា ជាពុំខាន។ អ្នកក្រុង បេតសៃដាអើយ! អ្នក ក៏ត្រូវ វេទនាដែរ។ ប្រសិនបើ អ្នកក្រុង ទីរ៉ូស និងអ្នកក្រុង ស៊ីដូន បានឃើញការអស្ចារ្យ ដូចអ្នករាល់គ្នា ឃើញនៅ ទីនេះ, ម៉្លេះ សមអ្នកក្រុងទាំងនោះ កែប្រែ ចិត្តគំនិត, ហើយ ស្លៀកបាវ អង្គុយក្នុងផេះ ជាមិនខាន។ ហេតុនេះហើយ បានជាខ្ញុំ សូមប្រាប់ អ្នករាល់គ្នា ថា, នៅថ្ងៃ ដែលព្រះជាម្ចាស់ វិនិច្ឆ័យទោស មនុស្សលោក, អ្នកក្រុង ទីរ៉ូស និងអ្នកក្រុង ស៊ីដូន ទទួលទោស ស្រាលជាង អ្នករាល់គ្នា។ អ្នកក្រុង កាពើណិម អើយ! កុំ នឹកស្មាន ថា អ្នក នឹងបានថ្កើងឡើង ដល់ស្ថានសួគ៌ ឡើយ។ អ្នក នឹងធ្លាក់ទៅ ស្ថាននរកវិញ។ ប្រសិនបើ អ្នកក្រុង សូដុម បានឃើញ ការអស្ចារ្យ ដែលកើតមាន នៅកណ្ដាល ចំណោម អ្នករាល់គ្នា, ម៉្លេះ សមក្រុង សូដុម នៅស្ថិតស្ថេរ គង់វង្ស ដរាបមកទល់ សព្វថ្ងៃ ជាមិនខាន។ ហេតុនេះ ខ្ញុំ សូមប្រាប់ អ្នករាល់គ្នា ថា, នៅថ្ងៃ ដែលព្រះជាម្ចាស់ វិនិច្ឆ័យទោស មនុស្សលោក, អ្នកក្រុង សូដុម នឹងទទួលទោស ស្រាលជាង អ្នករាល់គ្នា។»

ព្រះបិតា និងព្រះបុត្រា

នៅពេលនោះ ព្រះយេស៊ូ មានព្រះបន្ទូល ឡើងថា៖ «បពិត្រព្រះបិតា ជាអម្ចាស់ នៃស្ថាន បរមសុខ និងជាអម្ចាស់ នៃផែនដី, ទូលបង្គំ សូម សរសើរ តម្កើងព្រះអង្គ, ព្រោះ ទ្រង់ បានសំដែង ការទាំងនេះ ឲ្យមនុស្ស តូចតាចយល់, តែទ្រង់ បានលាក់ មិនឲ្យអ្នកប្រាជ្ញ និងអ្នកចេះដឹង យល់ទេ។ មែនហើយ! ព្រះអង្គ សព្វព្រះហឫទ័យ សំរេចដូច្នេះ។

«ព្រះបិតា របស់ខ្ញុំ បានប្រគល់ អ្វីៗ ទាំងអស់ មកខ្ញុំ។ គ្មានអ្នកណា ស្គាល់ព្រះបុត្រា ក្រៅពីព្រះបិតា, ហើយ ក៏គ្មាននរណា ស្គាល់ព្រះបិតា ក្រៅពីព្រះបុត្រា និងអ្នក ដែលព្រះបុត្រា សព្វព្រះហឫទ័យ សំដែង ឲ្យស្គាល់ នោះដែរ។

វិន័យ របស់ព្រះយេស៊ូ

«អស់អ្នក ដែលនឿយហត់ និងមានបន្ទុក ធ្ងន់អើយ! ចូរ មករកខ្ញុំ, ខ្ញុំ នឹងឲ្យ អ្នករាល់គ្នា បានសំរាក។ ចូរ យកនឹម របស់ខ្ញុំ ដាក់លើ អ្នករាល់គ្នា, ហើយ រៀនពីខ្ញុំទៅ។ អ្នករាល់គ្នា មុខជាបាន ស្ងប់ចិត្តមិនខាន, ដ្បិត ខ្ញុំស្លូត និងមានចិត្ត សុភាព។ នឹម របស់ខ្ញុំ ស្រួល, ហើយ បន្ទុក ដែលខ្ញុំដាក់លើ អ្នករាល់គ្នា ក៏ស្រាលដែរ។»

Matthew 11

Jesus and John the Baptist

11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.^[a]

²When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples ³to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

⁴Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: ⁵The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy^[b] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. ⁶Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

⁷As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? ⁸If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. ⁹Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’^[c]

¹¹Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. ¹²From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,^[d] and violent people have been raiding it. ¹³For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. ¹⁴And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. ¹⁵Whoever has ears, let them hear.

¹⁶“To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

¹⁷“‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’

¹⁸For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ ¹⁹The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

Woe on Unrepentant Towns

²⁰Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. ²¹“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. ²²But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. ²³And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.^[e] For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. ²⁴But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

The Father Revealed in the Son

²⁵At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. ²⁶Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

²⁷“All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

²⁸“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. ²⁹Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. ³⁰For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
