Local authorities in Vietnam and Cambodia inaugurated Tuesday a border gate.

The My Qui Tay-Som Rong border gate is situated in Vietnam’s Long An province and Cambodia’s Svay Rieng province, which share a 138 km land border.

Speaking at the inauguration, the authorities agreed to speed up measures to economically develop the border areas and hoped the establishment of the gate would contribute to improving living conditions on both sides.

Ha Noi — Viet Nam and Cambodia border areas should be targeted for increased development co-operation as part of a greater bilateral strategy, concluded a symposium in Ha Noi on Wednesday held to discuss the future of the two countries’ relationship.

Attendees at the symposium pointed to the need to facilitate trade promotion, apply incentives in tax and customs, and intensify the fight against smuggling and counterfeit goods that find their way across the border.

Other issues that were adressed included upgrading border checkpoints, the construction of inter-provincial roads, the planting of cash crops such as rubber, and an increase in cultural exchanges. The seminar was timed to mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Viet Nam and Cambodia.
