RFA quoted Cambodian soldiers defending Cambodia’s territorial integrity in the Chak Chreng area, located about 17 km from Preah Vihear temple, as saying that a number of Cambodian soldiers are hit by malaria there. An anonymous soldier told RFA on Wednesday that a number of soldiers in his unit are now facing malaria. This soldier said that troops in his army unit are now facing malaria. This soldier said that soldiers in this area all sleep inside mosquito nets, but they are still hit by malaria. This could be caused by their use of stagnant mountain water soaked with rotten tree leaves and the cold weather. A low-ranking army commander of the Cambodian troop in this region admitted that there are soldiers who are hit by malaria, however their number is not alarming. Colonel Ly Phon, commander of RCAF unit 82, said that a number of officers and soldiers are hit by malaria, however, the RCAF hospital located near Ko 1 region has special medicines to fight malaria.
