Nhem Tyhemarine, a 59-year-old teacher living in Chhbar Ampov, Phnom Penh, sued two ORL (Oto Rhino Laryngology/Ear Nose Throat) medical doctors. One the two is practicing at the Calmette Hospital, and the other at the Ang Duong Hospital. The patient suffered from ear inflammation, but during her consultation with these specialists, they told her that she required a medical surgery. Nhem Tyhemarine went under the knife on 31 August 2008 at the Ang Duong Hospital and paid a $500 bill for the surgery. Following the surgery, she could no longer close her eyes completely, nor can she open her mouth normally. The doctors told her that it was normal post-surgery symptom, and they assured her many times that this will quickly go away.
Six months later, nothing changed and Nhem Tyhemarine decided to travel to Vietnam. There, a specialist she consulted told that the surgery was improperly done: two veins draining the eye and the lips were cut off. It is now too late to fix the botched surgery. At her return from Vietnam, Nhem Tyhemarine sued the two Cambodian doctors and asked $100,000 in compensation. Her case will come to the court on 3 June.
