When he introduced his novel rice production method to Cambodian farmers more than a decade ago, Yang Saing Koma had to battle skeptics who laughed at his idea. How could less irrigation and shallower planting result in higher yield?

But Koma, founder of the Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture (Cedac), only had to tap one brave farmer to get his program going.

Today, his System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is an official rice production method endorsed by the Cambodian government, credited for doubling the country’s total rice output in the last decade.

News Article: Rainy season not over yet

Dear All,

CEDAC is calling for all farmers in theprovinces of Cambodia that are still affected by drought not to lose hope asthe rainy season has not finished yet. According the farming calendar, thereare still two more months remaining for this years rainy season. In the meantime CEDAC encourages farmers to maintain performing good farming practicesthat include compost collection and rice field preparation, so that they areready when the rain arrives.

CEDAC’s president Dr. Yang Saing Koma has been selected for the 2012 Ramon Magsaysay award

The Cambodian Centre for Study and Development in Agriculture (CEDAC) is proud to announce that its founder and president, Dr. Yang Saing Koma, has been selected for the 2012 Ramon Magsaysay award.

The Ramon Magsaysay Award is given to persons regardless of race, nationality,creed or gender who address issues of human development in Asia with courage and creativity, and in doing so have made contributions which have transformed their societies for the better. Dr. Koma, who is only the fifth person from Cambodia to receive the award, is being recognized for his creative fusion of practical science and collective will that has inspired and enabled vast numbers of farmers in Cambodia to become more empowered and productive contributors to their country’s economic growth.

CEDAC's Yang Saing Koma wins the Magsaysay Award

SIX INDIVIDUALS have been named recipients of this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Awards for their contributions to agricultural productivity, environmental protection and community development.

Related contributions to improving the farm sector were attributed to Cambodian Yang Saing Koma, who was cited for establishing, in 1997, the Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture that has been credited with introducing a sustainable rice production system for smallholder farms.

An agronomist, Mr. Koma also set up a body that allowed farmers to directly deal with the market to address predatory pricing. The CEDAC Enterprise for Development now has a chain of 13 shops that sell produce from over 5,000 farmers in eight provinces, and has even started to export organic rice.

CEDAC profession​al training in organic farming business is available for young graduates

Dear All,

Of your publication and broadcast interest!

In order to provide the opportunity for youth to take up a career in organic farming business and rural development,CEDAC organizes professional training in organic farm business management. The action learning oriented training program lasts six months. At the end of the training, the youth are supported to start their own farm business as well asto work with other farmers to improve their farming businesses. From 2012 to2022, CEDAC plans to provide an opportunity for up to 1000 young graduates to participate in the training program. In 2012, 17 fresh graduates are participating in the program, and six of them have already started their own farm business. There are already more young people registered for the next course, which will start in July 2012.

The training course is open for all interested young graduates. Scholarships are available during the six month course. After the training course, the trainees will also receive support in terms of capital investment, technical assistance, management and marketing support from CEDAC.

It is important to note that since 1998,CEDAC has organized training for 22 generations of young graduates. In the past training has specialized in how to be a development professional. However from 2012 onwards the course will focus more on how to be professionals in organic farm business.

CEDAC Invitation to the Press, field visit to Prey Veng Province

CEDAC’s News Article: Young Agri-Entre​preneurs Meet to strengthen as profession​al producers to supply the market

Dear Press,

30 Young Agri-Entrepreneurs (YAE) representatives from six different provinces are meeting to share their success experiences and to improve themselves to be the professional producers to supply the market from December 13-14, 2011 at CEDAC’s head office, Phnom Penh.

There are 313 rural youths including 117women received the vocational training from CEDAC on YAE course. They are now successful in their agri-business and entrepreneurship, that they could earn in average 2million riel per month and now plan to increase their organic productions to supply the market.

CEDAC’s President, Dr. Yang Saing Koma saidthat CEDAC plans to expand this program to reach 10000 other rural youths in the next ten years.

CEDAC calls for farmers to focus on rice seed selection for improving yield

CEDAC has been working for years in promoting farmers to improve local rice seeds.

As Cambodian farmers are now starting their rice harvest, CEDAC would like to call for farmers to select their best panicles from healthy plants to store as seeds to be used during the next season.

It is the right time for farmers to select rice seeds for the next season. CEDAC is therefore introducing some urgent technical measures to be taken by farmers so that rice yields can be increased next year.
