On Thursday, Prime minister Hun Sen called on farmers to continue pushing the production of rice and he also told them to save their rice stock to guarantee that their family have enough food. In a speech given at the yearly closing meeting of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery, Hun Sen said that during the period where the price increase of goods on the market is higher than usual, in March, the price of rise was soaring so high and Cambodian farmers were very pleased with this price of rice that is much higher than last year. While the price of rice is high, Hun Sen also called on farmers to preserve their stock of rice for themselves. Hun Sen said: “Just because the price of one kilo of rice with husk on is 900 riels (~$0.23), you become happy, but after you take that money from selling the rice to buy fish and meat, (you will find out that) their price has increased also.” Hun Sen pushed the Ministry of Agriculture and experts to further help the farmers so that the culture of rice can be become an agro-business because of the severe shortage of rice in the world.
