VietNamNet Bridge – Neighbourliness and comprehensive cooperation were two of the topics in the spotlight during discussions between National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen in Hanoi on November 5.
Trong praised Hun Sen’s outstanding contributions to strengthening and developing the friendship and cooperation between the two countries, after congratulating him on his re-election as Prime Minister of Cambodia for the fourth consecutive term.
“May the cooperation between the two legislative bodies be further promoted along with stronger ties between Vietnam and Cambodia,” emphasised Chairman Trong.
The Cambodian PM Hun Sen affirmed that the main aim of his visit was to strengthen his country’s friendship and comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam.
“Vietnam and Cambodia should make greater efforts to strengthen their traditional friendship and all-round cooperation in the years to come,” said the Cambodian government leader.
He concluded by expressing his thanks to Vietnam for its sincere assistance to the Cambodian people in their past struggles and during their current goal of national construction and development.

Prime Minister Hun Sen left for Hanoi Tuesday for a two-day official visit, where he is expected to improve cross-border trade with visa exemptions for Cambodians.
The premier will discuss the economy, trade, investment and the acceleration of border demarcation with his counterpart, Nguyen Tan Dung.
During Hun Sen’s visit, his first since the July elections, the two are expected to sign an agreement that will allow all passport holders to cross between the two countries without a visa, which will ease imports and exports.
“These agreements really promote the economics between the two countries, especially cross-border trade and free visas, so that ordinary people can make business along the border and travel,” said Koy Koung, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two are also scheduled to sign an agreement to link the countries by rail, as part of a pan-Asean railway initiative, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two countries will also seek greater cooperation between their two national stations, National Radio of Cambodia and the Voice of Vietnam.
“We will allow the news in Vietnamese to be broadcast on Cambodian national radio for 15 minutes each day, and Vietnam will help train Cambodians to use material and equipment for the radio in the studio,” Information Minister Khieu Kanharith said.
Both sides will share with each other music and background broadcasts from national festivals and events, he said.
In Hanoi, Hun Sen will also join economic summits with Burma, Laos and Vietnam.
Trade between the two countries increased from $180 million in 2000 to $1.2 billion in 2007, Vietnamnet reported Tuesday. From January to June this year, the two have traded $903 million. Both countries hope trade to reach $2 billion annually by 2012. Meanwhile, investment from Vietnam in Cambodia was $100 million in 2007.

Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh made the statement while receiving Cambodian Minister Hun Sen in Hanoi on Nov. 4, the first day of the latter’s visit to Vietnam as guest of his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung.
The Party leader spoke highly of the outcome of PM Hun Sen’s earlier talks with PM Dung as well as measures they agreed upon in order to accelerate the implementation of high-level agreements.
He warmly congratulated the huge achievements recorded by the Cambodian people in recent years, particularly the successful organisation of the fourth national assembly elections.
General Secretary Manh said he hoped that the Cambodian people, under the reign of King Norodom Sihamoni and leadership of the Royal Government, will obtain greater successes in building Cambodia into a country of peace, independence, neutrality, non-alignment and prosperity, and having friendly ties with all nations, especially with its neighbours.
For his part, PM Hun Sen asserted that the government and people of Cambodia will make every effort to consolidate and develop the solidarity, traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation with Vietnam.
The PM said he was glad to visit Vietnam on his first trip abroad since he took office for the fourth tenure, and to witness Vietnam’s important achievements during the renewal process.
On this occasion, PM Hun Sen thanked Vietnam for its valuable support and assistance during Cambodia’s past struggle for national liberation to escape from the former genocide regime, as well as its current cause of national construction and development.
The same day, PM Hun Sen was received by President Nguyen Minh Triet who said that Vietnam and Cambodia should strengthen comprehensive cooperation and increase mutual trust in political ties for greater results in the aspects of trade and investment.
The two countries also need to beef up relations between their ministries, sectors and agencies, in addition to the exchange of high-level visits, the President said.
PM Hun Sen informed President Triet of the outcome of his talks with PM Nguyen Tan Dung, stressing that the two sides agreed to boost the economic and trade relations in an effort to reach the target of 2 billion USD in two-way trade value by 2010.
While speaking of rapid development in bilateral economic, trade, investment, health and energy cooperation, the PM said Cambodia advocates the tightening of cooperative ties with Vietnam and Laos for the prosperity of the Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia development triangle.

HA NOI — The Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Hun Sen, is on an official visit to Viet Nam today and tomorrow to re-inforce traditional friendship and comprehensive co-operation between the two neighbours.
The Cambodian PM is making the visit at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart, Nguyen Tan Dung.
The two PMs will discuss measures to boost co-operation in all fields, particularly the economy, trade and investment; accelerate land-border demarcation and placing markers; and promote co-ordination at regional and multilateral forums.
The first visit of PM Hun Sen during his fourth term (September 2008-2013) is in the context of growing bilateral relations under the motto "best neighbourliness, traditional friendship and comprehensive and long-lasting co-operation".
The two countries have witnessed a number of exchange visits by high-level delegations. After his coronation in October, 2004, the Cambodian King, Norodom Siha-moni, twice visited Viet Nam, first in March, 2006, and again in June, 2008.
Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet visited Cambodia last February.
The two sides convened the fourth meeting on co-operation and development of their border provinces in February this year, and the 10th session of the Joint Commission for Economic, Cultural and Scientific-Technological Co-operation in October this year. The two countries have enjoyed significant progress in economic, trade and investment co-operation. Two-way trade has increased from US$180 million in 2000 to almost $1.2 billion last year. The target is $2 billion by 2010.
Viet Nam’s investment in Cambodia reached the $100 million last year.
Co-operation in education and training, energy, health care, transport, and national security and defence have advanced considerably.
The two sides have enjoyed a good working relationship in dealing with issues related to the border line and border security and order, and have agreed to complete the demarcation and marker plantation project by 2012.
The two countries have also worked to increase co-operation within a number of regional organisations, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and other regional and international co-operation mechanisms, including the Mekong River Commission (MRC), the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), the East-West Economic Corridor Development Programme (EWEC), and the Ayeyawady-Chao Praya-Mekong Economic Co-operation Strategy (ACMECS).
