Cambodian PM calls on national police to be role model of protector of people's interest

PHNOM PENH, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen called on police force to be a role model in order to protect the interest of the people, the official Agence Kampuchea Presse (AKP)reported on Monday.

"Police force needs to be a role model and right implementer just, sincere and unbiased in order to protect righteous interest of the people and assist people facing difficulties at all time and every where," AKP quoted premier's recent message as saying.

The premier made the message to commemorate the 64th anniversary of the creation of Cambodian national police force which was formed on May 16, 1945.

In his message, the prime minister acknowledged the national police force at all levels for their hard work and sacrifice to bring about national security both inside Cambodian territory and along its border.

Hun Sen also prayed for and deeply thanked to the souls of the fallen police forces and expressed his respect to their children, spouses and parents who had allowed those heroic forces to serve the country and continue to support all government's activities to achieve the present development.

Though Cambodia is now peaceful, he said, all police forces should keep up with the good practice to ensure the country's sustainable and dynamic poverty reduction measure and to bring more physical and emotional peace for Cambodians.

Cambodian oil price slightly down upon PM appeal

PHNOM PENH, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's major fuel retailer Sokimex has slightly decreased oil price at its pump stations after Prime Minister Hun called for such action on Tuesday, national media said on Thursday.

By Wednesday, the Sokimex's petrol price was 0.69 U.S. dollar per liter for regular and 0.71 U.S. dollar for premium, said English-language daily newspaper the Phnom Penh Post.

On Tuesday, Hun Sen appealed to the local fuel retailers to further drop oil prices because those at the international market have decreased for a long time.

"You should make oil prices even lower as a New Year gift," he said.

On Tuesday, at most pump stations in Phnom Penh, high-quality gasoline sold at 0.74 U.S. dollar a liter, and general gasoline 0.72 U.S. dollar.

During the past two months, Hun Sen had already asked local retailers to drop oil prices for two times.

The oil price here was once up to 1.50 U.S. dollars per liter at its historical height in 2008.

Prime Minister Hun Sen on Thursday called for his government officials to work to curb inflation that has seen the price of goods increasing daily.

The price of rice has reached 3,800 riel per kilogram and fuel 5,600 riel per liter at some stations, biting into the low salaries of many workers.

“I would like to appeal to all institutions of the government to try their best to carry out the measures being taken out in order to curb inflation,” Hun Sen said, speaking at a national conference on livelihood improvement.

The government has been facing inflation since mid-2007, he said.

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy said Thursday Hun Sen must reign in corruption if he wants to see inflation decrease.
