CAMBODIAN Prime Minister Hun Sen wrapped up his official visit to Singapore with a visit to Jurong Island on Tuesday morning.

He was also hosted to a golf game and lunch by Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

This is Mr Hun Sen's first official visit to Singapore since 2000. On Monday, the Cambodian leader called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana.

Both men reaffirmed their countries' close ties and agreed that both sides could explore new areas of cooperation, including tourism.

Mr Hun Sen also called on President SR Nathan and Mrs Nathan, visited the Marina Barrage, and attended a dinner hosted in his honour by PM Lee and his wife Ho Ching.

The official visit, which focused on economic ties, also saw Mr Hun Sen attending a luncheon hosted by Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang on Monday.

Addressing Singaporean businessmen at the event, Mr Hun Sen said Cambodia was eager to welcome investors from the Republic, and highlighted his government's efforts to encourage foreign investment.

Singapore's investments in Cambodia last year were US$278 million (S$378 million), an eight-fold increase from the year before.

PRIME Minister Hun Sen left yesterday for a three-day visit to Singapore, where he is expected to discuss measures aimed at increasing Cambodian exports to the city state.

The premier is scheduled to hold talks with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President SR Nathan, according to Hun Sen’s personal adviser, Sry Thomarong. Hun Sen will lobby the Singaporean leaders for tax reductions that could facilitate the export of Cambodian agricultural products, Sry Thomarong said.

Foreign Affairs Minister Hor Namhong and Commerce Minister Cham Prasidh accompanied the premier on the trip, which is scheduled to conclude tomorrow, Sry Thomarong said.

Earlier this month, officials close to the premier were mum on speculation that Hun Sen was heading to Singapore for medical treatment related to his left eye, which he lost in fighting in 1975.

Cambodian PM Hun Sen in Singapore for 3-day official visit

SINGAPORE : Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen is in Singapore for a 3-day official visit from July 25-27.

The Foreign Ministry said he is here at the invitation of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

The Cambodian premier will call on President SR Nathan and meet with Prime Minister Lee.

He will also play a game of golf with Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and meet the Singapore business community.

The programme also includes visits to the Marina Barrage and Jurong Island.

Mr Hun Sen's delegation includes his wife and several ministers, as well as a business group from the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce.

Koy Kuong told The Phnom Penh Post that: “According to the schedule, the PM will lead a delegation to visit Singapore based on an invitation from Ly Hsien Loong, the PM of Singapore.”Hun Xen, who was affected by Swine flu at the end of last month, is also reported to have eye problems and he missed many activities. Even though Koy Kuong did not provide comment as to whether Hun Xen will take the opportunity to take care of his eye or not, past reports have indicated that Hun Xen would be visiting Singapore for his health checkup as well.

Regarding details of the visit, Koy Kuong said that he is not commenting about it yet because there is still a lot of time left and the visit program could change until then.

Ong Yentieng, the personal advisor of Hun Xen and chairman of the government human rights commission, told The Phnom Penh Post on Tuesday that Hun Xen is cured of his swine flu, and his eye problem is also solved. Ong Yentieng declared: “I believe that the health of Xamdach Hun Xen, both the [swine] flu and the eye problem will be cured and he will be normal again.” He said: “Xamdach plans to travel to Singapore on 20 July.” Ong Yentieng said: “I know that he plans to go to Singapore on 20 July or a few days later. I am not sure if he goes there for his eye checkup or to attend a meeting.” CPP MP Cheam Yeap said on Tuesday that he received information from CPP officials indicating that Hun Xen will travel to Singapore for health follow up, but he does not know the exact schedule of Hun Xen’s departure. Cheam Yeap said: “According to information I received from party officials, Xamdach Hun Xen is affected by eye inflammation and he will check up his eye in Singapore.”
