Jailed Rebel Returns From Third Hospital Visit

Former Khmer Rouge president Khieu Samphan was returned to tribunal detention Tuesday, following his third visit to the hospital this week.

Tribunal observers said Wednesday they are still seeking information on Khieu Samphan's medical conditions, as worries mount that aging leaders will not see trial before they die.

However, a doctor at Phnom Penh's Calmette hospital, where all Khmer Rouge detainees are treated, told VOA Khmer Wednesday that disclosing the health conditions of Khieu Samphan would be a breach of medical ethics.

Khieu Samphan, the former president of the KR regime who is currently detained by the KR Tribunal, was sent to the hospital one more time on Tuesday so that he can receive a health checkup for a short period of time, based on the doctor’s request. Reach Sambath, the KRT spokesman, told a group of reporters that Khieu Samphan’s condition is normal, there is nothing serious for him, and that he will be taken back to the KRT soon. Khieu Ratana, Khieu Samphan’s daughter, said that she did not know that her father was taken to the hospital. At the beginning of this month, Khieu Ratana and Dr. Say Bory, Khieu Samphan’s defense lawyer, said that the 76-year-old Khieu Samphan cannot move the left side of his body, and he could not talk following his two-week hospitalization in May.
