The little known Khmer National Party (KNP) declared its merger with Kem Sokha’s HRP on 28 November 2007. At a press conference held at the HRP party headquarters, Sum Sitha, the KNP leader, provided the reason his party decided to merge with the HRP. He said that the HRP and the KNP hold the same political goals and are based on true democracy. Sum Sitha said that this union was done to gather all the democratic forces in order to win the upcoming 2008 general election. The KNP was formed in 2004. Including the KNP, there are 5 parties that have merged with the HRP, these parties include: Pen Sovann’s National Support Party, the BLDP, the New Cambodia Party, and the National Building Party.

The Norodom Ranariddh Party and the Sangkum Jatiniyum Front Party (SJFP) of Prince Thomico had declared their merger on Tuesday. Prince Ranariddh, president of the NRP, told RFA from Malaysia that the merger of the two parties will provide more strength to the royalist party. The merger took place after the meeting between delegates of the two parties in Malaysia. The SJFP plans to announce its dissolution in a soon-to-be-announced congress. Prince Thomico, the delegate general of the SJFP, will become the vice-president of the NRP after the merger.
