Hanoi, Vietnam (AHN) - The World Bank said on Monday it will put in place an assistance package to help Vietnam achieve its goal of becoming a middle income country by 2010.
"We will try to help the government achieve that goal," World Bank President Robert Zoellick told the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) during his two-day visit to the Southeast Asian country on Monday.
"The way to do that is to help all of Vietnam grow. The rural areas, so farmers can add more to the production of the country, some of the financial sector, energy sector, infrastructure," Zoellick was quoted as saying by VNA.
Vietnam is targeting a $2,000 annual per capita income by 2010.
Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung told the visiting World Bank president that his country is thankful for the development assistance provided by the bank to fight poverty.
However he added that even though Vietnam has halved poverty in a decade, the country remains poor with an annual income per capita of just $720.
The prime minister told Zoellick that there are still a lot of challenges facing Vietnam. Zoellick said he was "very impressed" with what he had seen on his tour and congratulated Vietnam on its poverty reduction program.
