Mrs. Mu Sochua, SRP deputy-Secretary-general and MP for Kampot province, indicated on 30 May that she will go to the court to provide her clarification as summoned. She will attend the court summon on Wednesday morning of next week in relation to a lawsuit brought up by Cambodia’s Strongman Hun Xen who accused her of defamation.
Mu Sochua stressed that she is ready to go clarify the court and she hopes that the court will conduct a through investigation into this case. “I have all the necessary proofs which consist of the speech of Samdach PM, it was pointing at me,” Mu Sochua said.
Mrs. Mu Sochua sent a lawsuit to the Phnom Penh municipal court of 27 April. In her complain, she is suing Hun Xen for defamation and she asked for 500 riels ($0.13) in damage compensation after Hun Xen talked in a speech in Kampot on 04 April about a “Cheung Khlang” (strong leg) woman who likes to create trouble to other, he said that she went to embrace someone, but she said that the person unbuttoned her blouse instead.
A few days following Mu Sochua’s lawsuit against Hun Xen, Ky Tech, Hun Xen’s lawyer, sued Mu Sochua, asking for 10 million riels ($2,500) in damage compensation. Furthermore, Ky Tech also complained about Mu Sochua’s defense lawyer, demanding that the Cambodian Bar Association (CBA) suspends Mu Sochua’s lawyer. In his complain to the CBA, Ky Tech accused Kong Sam Onn, Mu Sochua’s lawyer, of defending a politician and of holding a press conference with a politician, an act that he claims violates the CBA rule.
In the case of Ky Tech’s complain to the CBA, Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada sent an open letter to the CBA president, asking the latter to uphold the dignity and independence of the legal profession.
Up to now, Kong Sam Onn has not been suspended from the CBA yet.
Suon Visal, the CBA secretary-general, said that it is Lawyers’ Rights Watch Canada’s right to send its letter to the CBA, however, the CBA’s work is based on the law.
As of 30 May, RFA could not reach Sok Chamroeun, the prosecutor of the Phnom Penh municipal court yet.
Kong Sam Onn said that he will accompany his client to the court. “I did not say anything wrong. In his complain, Mr. Ky Tech did not point out any section or anything that stipulates that I did wrong,” Kong Sam Onn said.
Regarding Mrs. Mu Sochua’s lawsuit against Hun Xen, she is also threatened to have her parliamentary immunity lifted. On 29 April, 9 well-known NGOs in Cambodia issued a joint statement indicating that the threat to lift Mu Sochua’s immunity is an intimidation act.
