More than a game for Cambodia, football plays the balm

MOHAMMAD AMIN-UL ISLAM
TNN (India)

NEW DELHI, August 24: At times, football can be a healer. By the simple act of kicking a ball, the game can scoop out fun and excitement hidden inside individuals. Even nations.

Watching the visiting Cambodian side in the ongoing ONGC Nehru Cup seems to give an impression about their inherent joy of being footballers particularly when you know that Cambodia’s past is replete with tragic memories. Ravaged by internal strife, Cambodians virtually forgot how to smile. There ruled a sense of deep insecurity. But football has been able to kick out every possible worry; it has given them a ray of hope and happiness.

Cambodia is playing football. And that seems to be the biggest news for a country which is slowly coming out of the debris following the political turmoil in the 1970s. In its capital Phnom Penh, still recovering from decades of warfare and civil unrest and plagued by terrible poverty, football events remain few and far between. But even a few of them seem to affirm that Cambodia is making progress. Battered by its opponents abroad and beset by scandal at home, the national team is currently ranked 171st in the world.

"We don’t have facilities as other countries enjoy. Still, we are trying with our sincere effort to promote football," Cambodia’s Aussie coach Scott O’Donnell told TOI. Four years back in 2003, FIFA did its bit to bring about a change in Cambodia’s football set-up. The hopeful light of a new beginning emerged with the inauguration of a FIFA Goal project - new headquarters for the Cambodian Football Federation (CFF), a national training centre and a grass field were all unveiled as part of a major project.

"True. We don’t have facilities like other Asian countries. We also have very few football grounds for practice, let alone hosting tournaments. Yet, the federation is trying every possible step to develop football," explained 21-year-old midfielder Keo Kosal.

Back home, Cambodia is currently hosting the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Youth Football Championship. Interestingly, it is the first time that Cambodia is hosting a sport events after its tragic past ravaged the country.

Though they have already lost two matches here, this young side will return home with loads of confidence. Besides, the event has taught them the most essential lesson of how to stay united against odds. In the process, they have put their faith in football’s basic principle, which can defuse the animosity back home. "Most of us in this team are students. We are not professional footballers. Hence, this tournament has been a tremendous learning experience for us," added Sam Minar, a crucial member of the team.

Will they come to play in Indian clubs? Both Minar and Kosal smiled, and modestly added: "We play good football. If we are considered good, then why not play in the Indian league which, we have heard, offers good money."

Syria thrash Cambodia 5-1 in Nehru Cup [-Cambodia football still has a long way to go to compete internationally]

Favourites Syria crushed Cambodia 5-1 on Saturday to end the round-robin league with an all-win record in the five-nation Nehru Cup football tournament.

The Syrians, already assured of a place in Wednesday's final, toyed with the hapless Cambodians, who lost three of their four games and drew one.

Syria led 2-0 at half-time through goals by Mohammed Alzeno and Zyad Chaabo, before Maher Al-Sayed scored twice in the second-half and Aatef Jenyat also chipped in with one goal.

Teab Vathanak pulled in a consolation goal for Cambodia in the 66th minute.

Syria await either Kyrgyzstan or hosts India in the final.

Kyrgyzstan must defeat India in their last round-robin match on Sunday to qualify.

India, who are level with Kyrgyzstan on six points from three matches, enjoy a better goal difference and will need only a draw to move into the final.

Bangladesh were the fifth team in the tournament.

Nehru Cup: In the battle of the underdogs, Cambodia hold Bangladesh to a 1-1 draw

Cambodia hold Bangladesh 1-1

Statesman News Service (Kolkota, India)

NEW DELHI, Aug. 22: In the battle of minnows, Bangladesh squandered lead as Cambodia held them to a 1-1 draw in the fifth match of the Nehru Cup at Ambedkar stadium here today.

Mohammed Abul Hussain gave Bangladesh the lead in the 31st minute, while substitute Keo Kosal restored the parity in the closing minute for the Cambodians.

It was an inconsequential match for both the teams as they are virtually out of the tournament after being beaten in their earlier matches. Cambodia lost their first match against India, 0-6, while Kyrgyzstan overcame a spirited challenge by the South East Asian nation in a seven goal thriller. Syed Nayeemuddin’s Bangladesh lost their opener to favourites Syria (0-2), while host India beat them 1-0.

With nothing to play for, it was just a prestige match for both the teams. But the match lacked the firepower. After a zippy performance against fancied Kyrgyzstan, Cambodia appeared to have lost all their steam. Bangladesh played their usual defensive game, relying more on occasional counter attack. Bangladesh scored their first goal of the tournament with Abul Hussain heading a corner kick in the 31st minute.

The second half was the reflection of the first as both teams made tiring attacks on each other without actually threatening the rival defence. It was the substitutions that Cambodia’s Australian coach Mr Scott O’Donell made which saw the team revert to some aggressive football in the fag end of the second half. Their persistent effort paid off with a fleet-footed Keo Kosal, who came as a substitute for skipper Pok Chan Than, equalised for his team two minutes before the final whistle.

Cambodia manages to score 3 goals before losing to Kyrgystan 3-4 in a thriller match at the Nehru Cup

Cambodia lose a thriller

NEW DELHI Aug. 19: Young Cambodia showed courage and gumption, while giving a superior Kyrgyzstan a scare before being outpaced by the opponents 3-4 in the third tie of ONGC Nehru Cup tournament at Ambedkar Stadium today.

It was an extremely fast-paced match. Both the teams played an attacking game, probably Cambodia coach Mr Scott O’Donnell thought this to be the best way to tackle the physically superior Kyrgyzstan side.

It was the players from central Asia who drew first blood. In the 12th minute, a powerful right footer by Talant Samsaliev from 25 yards out, beat a diving Cambodian goalkeeper Oum Vaesna to go in. Five minutes later, Kyrgzstan doubled the lead with Bakyt Mamatov heading home a brilliant cross from the right by Davron Askarov. But then the game took an unexpected turn. Cambodia reduced the lead in the 35th minute when Man-of-the match Hok Sotitya scored through a free-kick from the edge of the box. Cambodia levelled the score in the 40th minute through Chan Rithy, while Chin Chum put the team ahead in the 43rd minute, taking advantage of a defensive lapse.

Tough start in India for Cambodia's Aussie coach O'Donell

August 18, 2007
tribalfooball.com

It was a tough start for Aussie coach Scott O'Donell after his Cambodia was humbled 6-0 by India in Friday's Nehru Cup clash.

Sunil Chettri and Steven Dias scored a brace each while captain Bhaichung Bhutia and N.P. Pradeep scored a goal apiece to give India a flying start in the five-nation tournament that has been revived after a gap of 10 years. Dias was adjudged the Man of the Match.

"It is good that we scored lot of goals after a long time in an international match. It will be confidence booster for the boys for the rest of the tournament," said Indian coach Bob Houghton at the end of the match.

For O'Donell, it was a real baptism of fire: "It was not about my midfield or defence. The whole team crumbled today."

Nehru Cup: Major defeat for Cambodia against India, final score 6-0

Nehru Cup: India thrash Cambodia

New Delhi, Aug. 17 (PTI): India made a flying start to the ONGC Nehru Cup football tournament, overpowering Cambodia 6-0, with Steven Dias and Sunil Chetri scoring a brace and N P Pradeep and skipper Bhaichung Bhutia also chipping in with a goal each.

Once the hosts settled down, they dominated the encounter and the match was largely played in the Cambodian half as the South-east Asians were taught a footballing lesson.

The forward line of Bhutia and local lad Sunil Chetri constantly troubled the opposition defenders and Renedy Singh and Steven Dias were quick to capitalise.

The Indians took the lead in the 17th minute when Pradeep received a lay-off from Bhutia and unleashed a vicious right-footer that screamed into the bottom left hand corner giving Cambodian custodian Oum Veasna no chance.

The goal increased the confidence of Bob Houghton's side and the Indians proceeded to give the opposition more trouble with a freekick from Renedy in the 28th minute hitting the crossbar.

On one of the rare Cambodian forays, the ball was saved on the Indian goalline by Renedy.

But the Indian attacks kept coming and a sliding Pradeep hit a Dias centre just wide off goal.

The woodwork denied India again when a header from Pradeep was blocked by the keeper and Bhutia's rebound came off the upright.

India face Cambodia in Nehru Cup opener

New Delhi, Aug 9 (IANS) India will face Cambodia in the opening match of the five-nation Nehru Cup International Football Tournament that starts here Aug 17 minus Iran, it was announced Thursday.

The tournament, revived after a gap of 10 years, was initially perceived to be a six-nation tournament but the last-minute pullout by Iran forced the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to stick to five teams.

Besides hosts India, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Syria and Kyrgyzstan will be the other teams in the 13-day tournament at the refurbished Ambedkar Stadium where new floodlights have been put up especially for this tournament, the AIFF said.

The tournament will be played in the round-robin league format and the final is slated for Aug 29.

"Iran first accepted the offer to take part but then they said they would not be able to send their national team. We said they could send their under-23 team.

"But they changed their stance and said they could only send a club team. We rejected this and had to stick to five teams," said Alberto Colaco, secretary AIFF, during unveiling of the trophy of the tournament.

The total prize money of the tournament is $100,000. The champion team takes away a prize of $40,000, the runners-up receive $20,000 while the third place team will be richer by $10,000. The winning team of every match will get $2,500 while the prize money for the Man of the Match will depend on the match.

AIFF president and union minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi was also present on the occasion along with tournament sponsor Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) director (human resource) A.K. Balyan.

"ONGC is supporting soccer at the grass root level so that young footballers bud into professional players at an early age. The Nehru Cup tournament will help India take a big leap in international football," said Balyan.

Dasmunsi dodged all queries and left mid-way before the question and answer session, saying he has a cabinet briefing (as parliamentary affairs minister) and other appointments.

The AIFF president kept his speech short by saying "President Pratibha Patil will be chief guest at the inauguration ceremony".

He also thanked the ONGC for making a completely new model of the trophy, as the original model was not available.

"The original trophy was not available and we are thankful to ONGC for providing us with a completely new model. The last trophy was won by Iraq in 1997, and after that due to the turmoil in their country, the original trophy was not available," said Dasmunsi.

Dasmunsi also thanked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for refurbishing the Ambedkar Stadium in a short period of time.

"The MCD has done a wonderful job at the Ambedkar Stadium. Now I will see that an amendment is passed in the constitution of the MCD to not allow any political meetings at this stadium," said Dasmunsi.
