A young man was immediately arrested in the morning of Saturday 21 June 2008, after he threw a coconut shell on the picture of Queen-Mother displayed in a public park near the Tonle Bassac police station, located in Chamcar Mon district, Phnom Penh city.
The strongly built suspect, dressed in school uniform, was sent to the Tonle Bassac police station. He claimed that his name is Ou Nan, he is 27-year-old and lives in the Prek Pek village, Koh Thom district, Kandal province. He was a former reserved university student.
Today, the young man claimed that he is angry with the royal family that is why he threw a coconut shell on the picture of Queen-Mother posted outdoor: “I threw the coconut shell on the queen picture. These royals are offspring of the Trasak Pha’em, and Trasak Pha’em killed the king (to usurp the throne). He killed all the Varman king lineage. Don’t you (the royals) remember 6 centuries ago? What did you do the Varman king, you the Trasak Pha’em group? You are like Pol Pot, Pol Pot led the country to be free from the slavery of the others…”
The younger sister of the suspect who declined to provide her name, said that Ou Nan, her brother, was a very good student at the Koh Thom high school. However, because he studied too much, he had some mental problems following his final high school exam at the Koh Thom high school. He was taken to several hospitals since 2002.
She also showed various hospitalization letters for her brother, as well as a number of medicines prescribed for him: “His illness is related to his brain, he has some mental illness. He was ill since 2002 until now. He is under medication since then, he keeps his doctor appointments, and he is taking his medications regularly. First, he went to the Russian hospital, then to NGO hospital, then medical clinic, right now he is taking medicines prescribed by the clinic.”
The criminal police of the Tonle Bassac police station said that he will send his report to his superiors along with the doctors’ letters for Ou Nan indicating that he is indeed mentally ill. His release is still pending on the decision from the higher up police level.
