Rocket News 24

When Shandong police received a call reporting a body floating in one of the province’s rivers on July 11, they wasted no time dispatching 18 of their finest officers to recover it.

As the police struggled to bring the corpse to the shore, rumor of the incident spread and a crowd of over 1000 spectators gathered, blocking traffic and preventing firefighters from reaching the scene.

Finally, 40 minutes later, Chinese police succeeded in recovering the body. Only, it wasn’t a body, but an inflatable sex doll.

Cambodian teen says parents chained her

POIPET, Cambodia, July 2 (UPI) -- Cambodian police said they are investigating a 15-year-old girl's allegations her parents had her chained up in their home as a sex slave.

Human rights group Adhoc is also investigating allegations the girl was forced to have sex with French and Thai nationals and taken to Thailand to work as a prostitute, The Phnom Penh Post reported Monday.

"The girl told me that her parents forced her to work, to be a beggar and to have sex with foreign men since she was 13 years old," neighbor Khiev Bory told the Post Sunday.

DUMB general should be sent to jail to enjoy his torturers' companionship

Lonely general begs for family’s freedom

Nuon Pak is a lonely man these days – lonely enough that he’s fighting to reunite with the very family sent to jail for torturing him.

So far, it’s been a losing battle for the RCAF brigadier general, whose wife and three sons were convicted of detaining, beating and torturing him over the course of nearly two months late last year.

At their sentencing in March, the general, a military adviser at the Ministry of National Defence, begged for leniency and threatened to kill himself as his wife and sons were handed seven and eight year sentences by Phnom Penh Municipal Court.

Ad Campaign of the Day: Promoting Secret Sex in Singapore [-No, we are not promoting this for Cambodia since people cannot afford cars yet!]

Singapore has a problem: It's a tiny nation with a gargantuan sexual appetite.

With 5.4 million people packed onto an island measuring just 270 square miles, Singapore ranks as the third-densest country on earth. All that seething humanity, bumping flesh on the sidewalks and stacked like warm cordwood in skyscrapers, makes it difficult for a loving couple to just wander off and find someplace to... you know, make more Singaporeans.

Inspired by that lack of privacy, one condom company has built a novel, naughty advertising campaign. “Discover a range of products that help you get better at getting away with it,” is the new slogan of the Okamoto Freedom Project, put on by Japanese condom manufacturer Okamoto – and boy, do the residents of this 100 percent urban nation seem to love it.

Newspaper name ‘confusing’

Journalist Ros Sokhet (Phnom Penh Post)

The Phnom Penh Post

The president of Cambodia’s Anti-Corruption Unit has opposed a freelance journalist’s bid to call his newspaper Anti-Corruption News because he thinks people will associate it with the ACU.

In a letter to Information Minister Khieu Kanharith dated February 17 and obtained by the Post yesterday, Om Yentieng asks that a media licence application by freelance journalist Ros Sokhet be rejected.

“I want [Khieu Kanharith] to intervene and make Ros Sokhet choose another name for his newspaper to avoid confusion,” Om Yentieng said.

“There are many other names in our Khmer language that Ros Sokhet can use for his newspaper that are useful for his ideal.”

The Four-legged Snake?

Dear All,

Just would like to share with you the attached photo and I can guarantee the authenticity of it. A brother of a colleague of mine caught a snake at the turn of the 2012. He took some photos of the little snake (about 20cm) before releasing it into a near-by pagoda (in Phnom Penh). It is a non-posionous snake with four legs. The person should have kept the snake and take a good care of it so that other people would have opportunity to see and study it. Experts may be able to advise if it is a snake or other creature.

Cheers,
Chenda

China introduces a communist tablet: the Red Pad [... at a non-proletarian price of US$1,600]

January 20, 2012
By Molly McHugh
Digital Trends

The extremely expensive tablet will marketed specifically towards party officials.

If you thought iPads were expensive, think again. A new Chinese tablet called the Red Pad will cost $1,600 dollars, but not just anyone can buy it, even if you do have the money.

After heavy criticism over its price from Chinese consumers, marketing and advertising featuring the Red Pad seemingly disappeared. Now, the Economic Times is saying that the manufacturer will only sell the tablet to bureaucrats and not the public. Originally the device was going to be available for anyone with the money (or the ability to subsidize the purchase), but the public backlash was so strong, the manufacturers decided to change its marketing tactics. It now looks like some back-pedaling occurred, and as a result the tablets availability will be limited to only Party officials.

But it’s not only the cost that will appeal to party members either. The Red Pad is specifically built to cater to their needs: the tablet from Red Pad Technology (which is supposedly in cahoots with the country’s Ministry of Information Industry) comes packaged with government database access and integration with the communist mouthpiece website, People’s Daily.

What’s possibly most amusing about the Red Pad is its operating system. The 9.7-inch Red Pad uses the Android OS, which is surprising considering China’s ongoing issues with Google. Aside from its ironic use of this platform and outrageous price, the Red Pad is similar to any other tablet: it features an A9 dual core processor, Wi-Fi and 3G support, 16GB of flash storage, with a sub 10-inch touchscreen display.

The Daily NK, an online newspaper based in South Korea and run by opponents of the North Korean government, said it had learned from a source in North Hamkyung Province that, "The authorities are handing down at least six months in a labor-training camp to anybody who didn't participate in the organized gatherings during the mourning period, or who did participate but didn't cry and didn't seem genuine."

Tuoi Tre News

18-year-old Nguyen Huu Tinh, from Tan Hung District, Long An Province, reported to police yesterday that a casino in Cambodia had captured him and then cut off one of his fingers after he lost US$3,000 there and his relative in Vietnam failed to repay as quickly as required by the casino.

He said the casino, named “Ba Quach” (“Mrs. Quach”), sent his finger to his mother on December 14 to urge her to pay his debt soon.

Vo Thi Biet, Tinh’s mother, told the police that on that day, a young man came to her house and handed her a black bag and four letters from Tinh, and asked her to quickly bring VND73 million (US$3,500) to Cambodia to pay off her son’s debt.

Sorry, no more snooker (billiard) and marijuana for a while for all of you East Oaklanders!

Fire heavily damages Oakland karaoke venue

12/14/2011
By Harry Harris
Oakland Tribune

OAKLAND -- There won't be any pool playing or karaoke singalongs at an East Oakland social club in the near future after it was heavily damaged Wednesday morning in a fire that also destroyed a few pounds of packaged marijuana, officials said.

The fire erupted about 3:30 a.m. in a shed attached to the Khmer Snooker Karaoke lounge in the 2200 block of International Boulevard. The cause is still under investigation but it may have resulted from some electrical problems, officials said.

The fire spread underneath the lounge's metal roof and caused extensive damage to the roof and interior before 20 firefighters brought it under control about 3:50 a.m., Batallion Fire Chief Bruce Nielsen said.

The Phnom Penh Post

The wife of an RCAF general who was tortured and detained for almost two months was accused on Sunday of masterminding the brutal ordeal.

Ngin Chantrea Devi, 50, and her sons Panh Sihana, 24, Panh Dararith, 23, and Panh Anh, 19, stand accused of keeping Brigadier General Nuon Pak a prisoner in his own home from October 18 until last Saturday, in a bid to make him sell land worth US$80,000 to pay off a debt.

Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Sunday charged Ngin Chantrea Devi with cruelty and torture; however, her three sons were charged only with being accomplices to cruelty and torture.
