Prince Sisowath Chivanmonirak from FUNCINPEC party continued to hold the post of first vice-president, while Tep Ngorn from the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) was elected as second vice- president of the Senate. The new Senators will be sworn in this afternoon at the Royal Palace.
Cambodia held its first non-universal Senate election on Jan. 22. The CPP swept the election, winning 45 seats of the 61-seat Senate. The royalist FUNCINPEC party gained 10 and the opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) only two.
Only four political parties competed for 57 of the 61 Senate seats. The remaining four were appointed by the National Assembly and King Norodom Sihamoni.
The Senate was created as an upper house by constitutional amendment in March 1999, with Cambodian People's Party (CPP) President Chea Sim as the head.
For the first term, 59 out of 61 Senate members were appointed by the three major parties in proportion to their seats in the lower chamber. The remaining two were appointed by the King.
