Son Chhay, SRP MP, had issued a letter to Kem Sokha warning him not to use CCHR forum as a platform to attack the Sam Rainsy Party. Even though Kem Sokha seems to brush off Son Chhay's warning by saying that his NGO is accustomed to making such criticisms on political parties in power, in the present case, SRP is definitely an opposition party not affiliated with the government. Rumors of Kem Sokha personal pictures being distributed to people participating his more recent education forum in which he presided have raised eyebrows on more than one observers who are questioning his ulterior motives and political ambition, as these personal pictures can obviously not help raise the people's awareness in democracy and human rights. Hangup between SRP and Kem Sokha does not serve the interest of the Cambodian people, nor that of democracy in Cambodia. (Photo RFA)

Son Chhay and Kem Sokha who were former colleagues at the Buddhist Liberal Democratic Party (Son Sann), have clashed over the interest of their new political party and organization.
In a letter issued 21 March 2006 on official National Assembly stationary, MP Son Chhay from the Sam Rainsy Party reminded former MP Kem Sokha, the current president of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights (CCHR), not to use the forum for education of democracy and human rights as a platform for scouting personal political support.
Kem Sokha who had experienced the same situation in the past, said that his activities are not connected to his search for political support.
Kem Sokha said: “I did not do anything noticeable, we have seen this in the past, during the time the Funcinpec party was about to enter the coalition government, they [Funcinpec] had the same reaction. Therefore, it depends on their [SRP] party to think about, and they should remember that what we are doing is in the name of a NGO which is involved in the people’s right and the political right … I am not doing this for myself.”
The letter issued by Son Chhay, the SRP National Assembly leader, accused Kem Sokha of using the education forum platform to attack the Sam Rainsy Party, and he did not provide enough time for SRP MPs participating in the forum to shed light on the questions asked by the people.
MP Son Chhay gave his observations to Kem Sokha, his former colleague, so that the latter can correct the errors in order to secure the cooperation between the Sam Rainsy Party and CCHR in the future.
Kem Sokha said that he has the same right as the general public also, and that he was doing whatever he can for the people and all political parties, in particular for the Sam Rainsy Party.
CCHR’s president added: “Even I am a NGO, as an individual, I have the right to criticize political parties including the Sam Rainsy Party. In the past, we criticized heavily on the parties in power – Funcipec and CPP – then SRP was applauding it, but now they (SRP) have this reaction instead, I don’t understand.”
