Mr. Nhiek Bun Chhay, the vice-prime minister and former co-minister of defense, former vice-president of the Senate, had received the position of secretary-general of the Funcinpec party through an official installation on Saturday 18 March.
The installation of the former general commander of the former royalist forces as secretary-general was signed by Prince Norodom Ranariddh, the president of the party.
Nhiek Bun Chhay gave RFA his first interview with Sok Serey at his home and provided details of his initial actions in his new function.
Nhiek Bun Chhay said: “First, we need to think on the reorganization of the leadership committee of the party, the reorganization of the permanent governing committee, and the structure of the secretariat because in the past there are holes, the secretariat office has received very little organization, and it was not sufficient as stated in the internal rule.”
The installation of the number two person within the rank of the party came at a time when the president of the Funcinpec party and a number of its officials were under heated criticisms from the prime minister, Funcipec’s coalition partner in the present government.
