The King of Cambodia, HM Norodom Sihamoni is performing a visit in Vientiane on Tuesday morning during his first official tour of the country from 14 to 16 March.
The Lao newspaper Vientiane Times reported that on Tuesday afternoon, the King met successively with Lao President, Khamtai Siphandon, at the presidential palace, with Mr. Saman Viyaket, the president of the Lao National Assembly, and with Prime Minister Boungnang Vorachith.
Mr. Khamtai Siphandon said that the royal visit of King Sihamoni is an important event strengthening the cooperation between the two countries, a cooperation started by the father of King Sihamoni.
The King will also visit the stupa symbolizing Laos in Luang Prabang province before heading to Vietnam on 16 to 18 March 2006.
Khmer Krom ask the King to raise their issues with Vietnam
During the occasion of the King visit to Vietname, Mr. Thach Setha, the former (Cambodian) senator and director of the Khmer Kampuchea Krom Federation, had sent a letter to the King asking him to raise a number of issues related to the freedom of living of Khmer Krom population in Vietnam.
The letter requested the Vietnamese authority put an end to all violations on Khmer Krom people and Monks such as: land confiscation, preventing the learning of Cambodian language, preventing religious belief, preventing the diffusion and receipt of information, preventing the formation of Khmer Krom associations, abolishing its policy of eliminating Khmer Krom people through the change of their nationality on identification card by marking them as Vietnamese rather Khmer (Vietnamisation of Khmer Krom people), etc…
All the request (made by the Khmer Kampuchea Krom Federation) was also provided in a letter handed to the Vietnamese embassy in Phnom Penh during the recent visit of Vietnam’s premier Phan Van Khai in Phnom Penh. However, the latter refused to accept the letter at the beginning of March.
The letter to the King also requested that he visit the provinces of Moat Chrouk (Chau Doc in Vietnamese), Kramuon Sar (Rach Gia), Peam (Ha Tien), Khleang (Soc Trang) and Preah Trapeang (Tra Vinh or Vinh Binh) etc… so he can see by himself the living conditions of Khmer people and Buddhist Monks there.
