It will be a proud moment for Cambodian ambassador Princess Norodom Arunrasmy when she welcomes her brother King Norodom Sihamoni on his maiden state visit to Malaysia tomorrow (March 27).
His three-day trip will cement the warm traditional ties between Cambodia’s royal family and Malaysia, which began with King Norodom Sihanouk’s visit here in 1962. Sihanouk, who abdicated the throne in favour of his eldest son Sihamoni in October 2004, was greeted then by the late Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail, who was the third Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Forty-four years following that meeting, their sons are set to repeat history.
Sihamoni, 53, will be received by Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail, the present Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“My father was very honoured to be warmly welcomed here and it is a nice touch of irony that both sons are now kings.
“I worked doubly hard to get my brother to come and meet His Majesty Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin,” Arunrasmy said.
Sihamoni’s 20-member entourage will include Foreign Minister Hor Namhong.
Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will have an audience with the monarch, who wants to strengthen bilateral co-operation.
The monarch’s visit is, however, occurring at a time of controversy involving the Cambodian government and royalist party officials.
