On the occasion of the [Cambodian] New Year, Mr. Thach Ngoc Thach, the executive president of the Khmers Kampuchea-Krom Federation (KKKF), who recently arrived in California after leaving New York City, to celebrate the Cambodian New year with other Cambodians, told Radio Free Asia that the KKKF is very active in raising the international awareness on the recognition of the rights of Khmer Kampuchea Krom people on their native land which is currently under the occupation of the Vietnamese authorities.

Among the activity led by the KKKF is the international dissemination of the identity of Khmer Krom people.

Mr. Thach Ngoc Thach said: “The KKKF had requested an organization with close cooperation with the UN, to visit Thailand to interview Khmer Kampuchea Krom people, as well as [Khmer Kampuchea Krom] monks currently living in Thailand, and [Khmer Kampuchea Krom] monks and people living in Cambodia. They will spend one month in Kampuchea Krom visiting the provinces of Svay Tong, Pol Leav, Preah Trapeang, Khleang, among others. They should find out who the Khmer Krom people are. We have stressed that Khmer Krom people originated from the Funan kingdom, they led since the O Keo (currently known as Oc Eo) [era] … they should find out whether Khmer Krom people are the original people or something else.”

Thach Ngoc Thach also told RFA about the KKKF intention of raising this issue at the International Court of Justice at the Hagues, Holland, in order to inform the International opinion on the plight of Khmer Krom people and to ask the international court to help solve the killing of Khmer Krom people by the Vietnamese.

Thach Ngoc Thach added: “On 25, 26, 27 August [2006], we will organize a meeting at the Peace Palace at the International Court of Justice in the Hagues, and we will raise 5 issues: (1) the [Vietnamese] colonialism, (2) our rights to self determination, (3) our autonomy, (4) Kampuchea Krom history, (5) Khmer Kampuchea Krom killing crimes perpetrated by the Vietnamese. We will ask as to what we should do to sensitize the international opinion. Then, at the end of this year, KKKF will organize another meeting to revisit the support provided by the international opinion on the five issues raised so that we could apply them in 2007.”

During this New Year, Mr. Thach Ngoc Thach is taking this opportunity to send his wishes all Khmer people.

Thach Ngoc Thach said: “On the occasion of the New Year, KKKF and myself are wishing a happy new year to all Khmer Krom people in the world, and in particular, Khmer Krom people living inside the country [Kampuchea Krom], as well as the tens of thousands of monks. May they all be in good health, have longevity, have the determination in patriotism, and be united in returning back their freedom rights…”
