UN peacekeepers blamed for bringing HIV to Cambodia

Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Cambodia's prime minister has blamed United Nations peacekeepers for bringing a host of ills to the country in the early 1990s.

And he's warned Cambodian soldiers about to be deployed to Sudan not to do the same.

The UN sent its largest-ever force to Cambodia in 1993, but its peacekeepers have been accused by Prime Minister Hun Sen of creating a flourishing sex trade that brought HIV/AIDS to the country.

He also says the peacekeepers drove up inflation by flooding the markets with US dollars.

Yes, Hun Sen is quite right about that. However, he forgot to tell people that it was UNTAC who brought him the internaitonal legitimacy he has now. Without UN, he would not be able to scream like he does right now. So, think tank before generalising the activity.
