Senior Funcinpec party officials have denied the large number of rumors indicating an internal crisis within Funcinpec, they assured that solidarity and union still prevails within the party led by Prince Ranariddh. Khieu Sam, Funcinpec MP from Kandal province, explains that he did not notice anything abnormal within the party, denying that any defection had occurred. “When someone say Funcinpec militants are defecting to another party, it is false. I verified it, there is nothing!” When told about this Funcinpec deputy governor of Siem Reap who declared his defection to the CPP, the MP declared that he is not offended by it, Funcinpec and CPP are partners in the coalition government.

Another senior official who chose to remain anonymous, reveals that the latest defector (the deputy governor of Siem Reap) had bought the name of someone else, and that he only answered to the appeal of the prime minister asking those who bought someone else’s name to reveal themselves. “Besides some small problems within the party, the general situation is frankly not that worrisome,” he said.

In a statement broadcasted Thursday, the youth movement of Prince Ranariddh’s party had sent to the leaders 17 recommendations. It calls on avoiding decision making by single individual, and to set up as soon as possible a leadership committee in which the members would be selected from those who are known for their loyalty to the party, i.e. old time party supporters rather than opportunist courtiers. The youth movement also asks to put an end to the buying of positions within the party.
