Hong Kong - A Taiwanese woman was arrested on Wednesday allegedly trying to smuggle 3kg of high-grade heroin into Hong Kong hidden in packets of dried fruit, customs officers said.
The woman was stopped on a routine check at Hong Kong International Airport after flying into the city from Cambodia and seven packets of dried plums were found in her luggage.
Customs officers examined the dried fruit more closely and found 3.1kg of heroin hidden inside the packets, a spokesperson for the customs department in the city of 6.8 million said.
The woman was being held in custody on Wednesday while the case was investigated by customs officers. Heroin smuggling is an ongoing problem in Hong Kong because of the proximity of producer countries.
