King Sihamoni's official visit to "Dear Leader" Kim Jong Il in North Korea

Cambodian King starts state visit to DPRK

Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni left here on Monday for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to pay a state visit.

It is King Sihamoni's first official visit to the DPRK since he was crowned king on Oct. 2004 after his father abdicated his throne.

"It is to further strengthen the traditional friendship relations between Cambodia and the DPRK," an adviser of the King said at the international airport.

Cambodian Senate President Chea Sim, the National Assembly President Heng Samrin and other members of royal family as well as diplomats saw the King off at the Phnom Penh International Airport.

Besides state visit, King Sihamoni will also visit his father and mother, retired king Norodom Sihanouk and queen Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, who have been in the DPRK since Feb. 28, and plan to return to Cambodia in May.
