PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) - Five villagers were killed by lightening and 50 houses destroyed during a violent thunderstorm at the start of the Cambodian New Year holiday, police said Tuesday.
The storm, which also injured two people, pummeled villages across the southeastern province of Prey Veng last Friday, said Hen Vuthea, the province's deputy police chief.
"There was torrential rain with lightening which hit the people while they were celebrating the New Year holiday at home," Hen Vuthea said.
Hen Vuthea said about 100 families lost their homes and have received rice, tarpaulin, and clothing from the provincial Red Cross.
Earlier this month, in the central region of the country, a violent thunderstorm struck a housewarming party killing four people, injuring seven and destroying 40 houses.
